To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

too many inside jokes… it is arrested development… if you do not watch it from the beginning, you do not get it… period… good shows suck on network tv…
sad that this won’t be back….
this show I found by mistake on netflix.. I must say it’s hard to believe this show was canceled. We need more funny cop shows. I mean would you rather see another CSI crime scene or some funny detective work that a family can actually watch together ?
i loved!!! The Good Guys it kept my husband and I laughing the whole time. I want another season and more seasons after that.
I’m terribly disappointed this show has been cancelled. The times it was poor but we pvr’d the show every week and watched it during the weekend. It was a very funny show that totally kept my attention. It had quickly become one of my favorites. I am sad the ratings did not support it. I wish they would try cable.
WE LOVE THIS SHOW!!! My family is from Dallas, I did my masters degree @ SMU and my family worked at Millet the Printer for decades!!!
This is one of the 1st funny cop show I have ever seen! FUNNY, great directing, great shots and great actors and actresses!!!
PLEASE BRING GOOD COPS BACK!
Found it on Netflix (we don’t watch major network TV) and fell in love with the show!
PLEASE SHOOT MORE EPISODES!!!

I loved this show!
I have been waiting on the return of this show and finally thought to research the net and much to my dismay, it is cancelled. I am a police officer and happen to work in a unit that pairs us up with a partner, which is uncommon in most jurisdictions. I “totally get it”. The reviews said you either get it or you dont. My partner is the old grizzled type, and I see so much of him in Bradley’s character, tho I would be the one to drive the Trans Am! Please, someone on cable, pick up this series!!… Read more »

i liked the show should come back
I found this show on Netflix and after watching all 20 episodes i went out and bought a trans am, grew a mustache, and got a pair of mirrored aviators.
Damn it, I totally agree with everyone else. I just watched like 10 episodes over 2 days and really really like this show. I watch alot of shows and movies and I give a pretty good review. I feel after 2 or 3 episodes you have no choice but to get hooked. You know what I am done, I am really pissed that there are only 20 episodes and I am going to space them out so I can enjoy what is left. Pretty weird, I am actually pissed off about this. I want more Dan Stark, he is totally… Read more »
