To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

So, for the first time in my life, I’m searching online to see when my favorite show, The Good Guys will be returning. I am saddened that it is not. This is a smart show and so dry witted. The chemistry amongst all the main characters is fabulous. The stories are good. The acting is good. I suppose mainstream Americans must not appreciate good. This is so disappointing.
WHY WHY WHY Would you cancel one of the best and most clever shows on TV just because people aren’t watching TV. personally TV should be for sports. TV shows should go straight to netflix or the internet. The first time i even heard of this show was netflix, watched every episode and couldn’t wait for more. how does law and order keep getting more seasons it like the same thing over and over and over. this show i guess was to clever for the joe blows that watch all the boring crap season after season. if i had the… Read more »
So sad to find out the The Good Guys won’t even be back as a summer drama. Did they ever think that a show on a Friday night may not get the viewers they were looking for? Loved the show and the characters I’m very sad that it will be gone.
Way BUMMER! After a steady diet of reality cop shows and CSIs, my husband and I were ready for some new silliness. 🙁
I was so tickled by Good Guys, all the goofball characters, the plot twists and turns–the cars through the walls. 😀
Guess it went the way of My Name Is Earl….alas, lost for the lack of a sympathetic cable channel…
Sad..Very dissapointing!!!!!!! My husband, our two teenage daughters and I loved this show. We have watched season one at least twice entirely, on Netflix, and we were looking forward to season 2. It seems like the ‘reality’ show makers have taken over.
I am so sad the show is not coming back I’m such a big fan
Just searched for ‘the good guys’ online, wondering when it would start again. Very disappointed it won’t be coming back Actors, story lines & ‘quirky’ humor made this show one of the top BEST of last season. 🙁
The show ‘Life’ on another network, also a ‘quirky’ cop show, was great and also cancelled way too soon.
Loved this show!! We got it!! So disappointed that it has been cancelled….
i am sorry to see it not coming back. they r right i think it would do better on cable.
Loved the show and was very very sad to see that it has not continued. Reminded of Psych and Warehouse13.
This was a great show and if people really don’t understand it because its to “quirky” then i have just lost a lot of faith in the abilities of the human intellect.
I was just online looking for the fall line ups and searching for THE GOOD GUYS. I was so disappointed to find out the show hs been canceled. It was funny. I just loved it, and looked forward to it every week. They all had good chemistry together as actors. I will miss this show. It was new and refreshing. You never knew what was going to happen. I have to say that FOX 5 has been extremely disappointing for the past few years, when it comes to putting on new shows and canceling them. I believe you should really… Read more »
I am very sorry to discover that The Good Guys won’t be back. I loved it and was wondering “when” to expect more episodes. It always disappoints me when shows I enjoy (like this) are cancelled but so-called “reality” TV continues to “thrive.” For what it’s worth, I totally “got” The Good Guys, thought it was hilarious, and am saddened that it will not continue.
this is a disapointment i loved this show! in my opinion i think this was the best cop show ever made… i dont understand how people couldnt find this hysterical…hmm but those same people probably watch reno 911 or some other cop show like that…
Another good show bites the dust cause the public is not ready for “cop humor”. Saw it on Netflex and I’m hooked!
