To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

What DA at Fox gets the final say on the tv cancellations? This was one of our FAVORITE shows! The entire family loved it. It was quirky and funny and totally good entertainment. The desk jockey at Fox needs to get better sources for his ratings info.
Why does fox cancel every great show? I hope the rating goes up enough on Netflix that they’ll bring it back. It’s hasn’t even been a year since the last episode. What an awesome show.
loved the show, very dissappointed it wont be on this season.
I like the show I too found it on netflix and now I am a big fan. I don’t have tv stations so I watch all my tv via computer if I had tv I would have been watching this all the time
I stumbled on this through Netflix also and the show is awesome! The finale is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time…too bad no season 2 because this is a great show; refreshing to see something different.
Great great show! It is sad that the big wigs at FOX dont give shows more than one season. FOX puts out the best shows but they never last more than a season. I really don’t like FOX because of this. They canceled Family Guy, FireFly, and now The good Guys its a shame. At least they brought Family Guy back however it doesn’t make up for FireFly and The Good Guys. Thank You so much Netflix for putting these shows on so at least we knew of their existence.
Horrible decision. Probably the best cop show ever. (I’m being stone cold serious.)
I came across this on net flix and was mortified to learn it was canceled.
What a great, funny show. Almost a cryin shame it was ended. Where’s the justice
In t.v. Land? First my name is Earl, and now this!
I can’t believe this show was cancelled!!! I loved this show, every episode I’d laugh so hard I cried and sometimes turned purple. I would love to see this on cable. USA, TNT, somebody please, please, PU-LEASE pick this up. I need a good dose of Jack and the magic mustache!
I am horrified that this show was cancelled 🙁 I found it on netflix because of not having cable or dish… And cannot believe how hilarious it is. Sad to see it is cancelled 🙁 People today are too into blood, guts, murder, and sex. Seems like that’s all that will sell anymore.
We stumbled across this show on netflix. It’s so funny we already finished all 20 episodes and I was saddened to find out there isn’t a season 2. It’s so funny!!
This show is definitively one of my top 5’s and trust me ive seen a **** ton of different tv series. It is such a disappointment that they cancelled the show. I wish to see Ron Stark live on! he is hilarious, love his lady killin powers that seemed to die down towards the end of the season but hopefully it will make a come back.
I stumbled across this series on Netflix and love it so far…im on episode 5. I thought Bradley Whitford was fantastic and he carried the show (best performance since Billy Madison). Im disappointed this will be it.
You won’t be disappointed; the show is awesome and the finale is one of the best I’ve seen in a long time…too bad no season 2
Been waiting it’s return!
I think it would of done better if not on Friday nights
