To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

We just found this on netflix-this would be a great cable show. Someone please pick it up!!!
I never even heard of this show before Netflix recommended it. What a great show! FOX execs lack patients, foresights, wisdom, commitment, intelligence, or access to viewer data. But we already knew all of this… Oh, how I wish a cable network would pick it up!
I loved it! I watch every episode and thought it was funny. Too bad it’s cancelled, it should of had a better time slot!!
Gosh!that is the best Cop drama me n my hubby ever watch!so disappointed they want to cancel it!
I thought it was a great show and am disappointed it will not be back.Thats just like fox.
Like everyone else, I just finished watching the 1st season on Netflix and was very disappointed to find there was not a 2nd season. This show was very well written, funny, and ten times better than the crap they have on now like Family Guy and The Simpsons. Bring it back!!!!!!!
I just found it on netflix and iv never heard of it and I watch fox all the time (simpsons, family guy, american dad) but I just finished the first season and I am very disappointed that there will not be a second, the show was amazing. If at all possible I for one would love for the show to come back. I would def put its comedy level up there with the simpsons, family guy, and american dad
…This is devestating

Mr. Whitford, you have been robbed. I believe I speak for everyone when I plead, “Pay no attention to television’s inability to spotlight the right actors. We need Dan Stark in our lives. Desperately…”
i too just found out about this show, despite the fact it first aired more than a year ago… terrible advertising, terrible time slot… awesome show. what were you thinking fox by cancelling this show? would have gotten way better ratings than a high of 1.6 and a low of .6 if you had properly advertised it, and gave it a better time slot. better than 90% of the crap you put on your network, and by far the best cop show out there. shame on you fox network… just for that move i will be removing your channel from… Read more »
I loved it. They keep moving the time so I never knew when it was on. I am really enjoying it on Netflix. There needs to be more shows like this,,bring it back on Cable.
May the advertising sucked? Maybe it didn’t succeed b/c it aired Friday nights. I too found it on Netflix, my boyfriend and I are in love w/ this show!! So sad they aren’t making more.. I laugh out loud always when I watch dan and jack : )
Like many of the others who commented, I just found season 1 on Netflix and the wife and I love it!! So much so that I’m afraid to tell her the one season we are almost finished watching is all we get of Detective Dan Stark. Such a shame!!!
You have to be kidding~! This was one of my favs~! EVER~!! It made me laugh and was wonderful water cooler conversation~! They were a perfectly matched cop duo….I’m so disappointed. 🙁
