To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

I liked the show and looked forward to it every week, I liked it was in your face to the politcally correct!! may somebody will pick it up.
I LOVE The Good Guys and will really miss it!
The Good Guys tend to be an acquired taste, especially for those used to near reality based police dramas, which are detail and procedural based with more sutle relationships between the crime fighters, thus this show at first seems foreign to many current tv viewers “refined” sensibilties. Here the focus is the relationship and police style between these two cops, Jack (by-the-book type) and Dan (older “just-go-getem’ rules-be-damned type) plays out the contrast between the two “wing-it” stype contrasts to starched collar type cops. And in the end results giving some validation that old fashioned hound-dog detective style, can still… Read more »
i think this is a great show originality, comedy, action by far one of the best shows on tv.
It is too bad it is cancelled. It is a great show.
unbeleivable!! this show is awesome hopefully USA will pick it up since they have burn notice from the same creator.. this show is so funny especially “don’t tase me bro” that episode was a riot. people need to watch these more unconventional shows. FOX comes up with some of the best shows then cancels them and they do not advertise them enough..
I will miss this show it was the hi light of friday night viewing and was really entertaining.
I really loved that show. I finally had a show to look forward to. I’m wondering if the show was promoted well enough? Most people that I have talked to have never heard of the show or they have seen it and enjoyed it. I am going to miss the trans am driving mustache combing punk busting character……………………………………
Totally believe they made a mistake cancelling this show. This show successfully pulled off the cheesey lines and the mustache but still have all the amazing drama like all the great cop shows. Moving The Good Guys to a channel like FX will set this show off on a long road to success. Good luck to all the guys!
Breaks my heart! Nothin’ like BUSTIN SOME PUNKS in a Sweet Trans Am on a Friday Night.
I enjoyed the series, The Good Guys, it was refreshing and enjoyable to watch. Bring it back.
why dont they just move it to FX not everything on tv needs to be canceled anymore niche shows can do very well on the right channel. look at sons of anarchy it wouldnt do well on network television but does great for cable. this show would do at least as well and fox should think about maybe putting it on a different day or making it a summer series.
What a shame. It was a great show.
What a surprise, another highly entertaining original show blown away by the sl*ts of FOXtv. These soul-less idiot “punks” need busting for another terriable decision! Gonna miss the Mustache & Belles.
This cancellation isn’t just wrong, it’s crimey. After “Partners” I really want them to make Savage & Stark into a TV movie. Let’s hope The Good Guys finds its way to FX.
I’m gonna miss watching Jenny Wade’s fine ass every week…
