To no surprise, FOX’s The Good Guys has been cancelled after one season and 20 episodes. The series stars Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks as an unlikely team of Dallas detectives.
The Good Guys debuted last Spring to a disappointing 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.93 million total viewers. Over the summer months, the ratings seemed to drop each week, hitting a low of a 1.0 rating and 3.42 million viewers.
Despite the poor showing, FOX kept the series on the fall schedule. On Friday nights, the numbers continued to slide. Good Guys hit a series low on October 22nd with a 0.6 rating and just 2.31 million viewers. Episodes typically ranked in last place for the demo in the timeslot. Realistically, no one has been expecting a second season renewal.
The series was shot on location in Dallas. Janis Burklund, head of the Dallas Film Commission, says that her high-ranking contact at Fox Television Studios has confirmed the show’s cancellation. The network hasn’t officially cancelled it but the production studio won’t be making any more episodes. The local area hasn’t had much luck this season. FOX’s Lone Star was cancelled after just two episodes and the episode order for NBC’s Chase has been reduced.
Of The Good Guys, Burkland said, “We liked the show. And they had a great experience here. But the ratings weren’t good. I asked if there was any shot at cable, and he said there didn’t appear to be any shot at that either, and I think it would have done well on cable. It’s not the kind of show network viewers understand — it’s too quirky. It’s one of those shows where either you get it or you don’t. Where cable viewers are more apt to go sampling and try out different stuff, network viewers are looking for more traditional shows. And it had a horrible time slot.”
The TV show’s sets are still intact at a local Dallas studio but will likely be struck in January. The final episode of Good Guys, titled “Partners,” aired on December 10th.
Update: Hanks confirmed the cancellation via his Twitter account on 12/27/10.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Good Guys has been cancelled and won’t be back for season two?

This was one of our favorite shows – can’t believe it was canceled!
I am sorry they cancelled this show. It was my favorite show hands down last year. It was very funny with witty plots. I think it might have done better on a different besides Friday night. Wish they would give it another go-
Great show!! I stumbled across it on Netflix and loved every episode. It was refreshing to have a cop show that walked in light and humor vs. the dark side of humanity such as any episode of Law & Order Special Victim’s Unit. Stark & Bailey played well off each other. Dan Stark’s lines are classic. Bring back THE GOOD GUYS for us good guys!!
I freaking love this show! Tom Hanks son looks just like him at times and has great comedic timing also. Detective Dan Stark’s character is hilarious.
The writing is fantastic, the editing and the music are perfect.
Honestly, you’d have to be an idiot to cancel a show of this caliber (pun intended).
FOX execs made a huge mistake on this one!
Really, two of our favorite show. Good Guys & Lie to Me cancelled. Wow. Guess we won’t be watching much syndicated t.v. any more.

Thay was the funniest cop show since “Sledgehammer”
Was out years ago. I’m really disappointed it was canceled.
Please, please return this comedic duo to the screen
It has given me a huge burst of laughter in each episode, I can’t say
Enough good about it!!!
How sad. We missed it this fall and just found out it was cancelled. We have 2 very young children and this was one of the few things we made time to watch…..at least in our age bracket that was not animated.
Netflix was where I found it, maybe they could keep the show going. FOX was stupid to toss this jewel! Loved the show didn’t even know it was made till a friend told me he found it on netflix. Now I tell everyone to watch it. Bring it back!
very sad
Just found it on Netflix and loved the show but, like all different shows it was tossed in the bin while,so called great shows like the Simpsons get renewed. I hate Fox.
This was one of our favorite shows my husband is really disappointed that it has been cancelled- It is sad we have lost three of our shows this fall. Lie to Me, Good Guys, and the Defenders. All really fun shows to watch.
yes I am very disappoinited I loved that show. I may be bais because it was done in my home city but I still like the characters especially the one with the mustache…I wish cable would pick it up. And maybe get a better supporting cast….the little lawyer lady can vanish but the chief and the partners were great.
Recently discovered on Netflix- now one of my favorites. I’ve only seen 12 episodes, but all have manages at least one roaring laugh. Would be great if Netflix or a cable channel would bring back for new episodes!
b/s this show was awesome better then stupid reality shows where they film people and their drama like jersey shore that show is no diffrent than an average college kid bring a camera to my life i get drunk, i go out, i do stupid stuff at least this show was funny and fox cancels it good work
