Even Martha would agree that this latest news isn’t “a good thing.” The Martha Stewart Show has been cancelled after seven seasons on the air.
Hallmark Channel has opted not to renew the daytime show due to high production costs and low ratings. Martha averages only about 225,000 viewers.
On the positive side, The Martha Stewart Show will remain in production and new episodes will continue through April. Stewart and her staff are planning a lavish series finale which will air in May. Reruns will continue to air for the remainder of the season, through the summer months.
Distributed by NBC Universal Domestic Television, The Martha Stewart Show debuted in first-run syndication on September 11, 2005. The series moved to Hallmark in the fall of 2010 as part of an overall deal that included a commitment from Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia (MSLO) to produce original new series and specials to compliment Martha and the rest of the cable channel’s lineup.
Hallmark initially scheduled an eight-hour block of Stewart programming but the ratings were poor so it was quickly scaled back to five hours.
The cancellation news was first reported by the NY Post. In response, MSLO’s Lisa Gersh told employees via email that the company will continue to do business with Hallmark, “we are currently exploring programming concepts for Martha Stewart and other MSLO brands beyond this fall.”
At December’s UBS investor conference, Gersh said, “Our expensive studio lease is expiring next year, and we will either bring television in-house or find lower cost space, which will significantly reduce our TV operating margins.”
The fate of Hallmark’s other MSLO-produced shows is still up in the air — including Emeril’s Table, hosted by Emeril Lagasse.
What do you think? Are you sorry that Stewart’s show has been cancelled? Did you follow it to Hallmark?
Not a good thing for Martha.
I can’t believeMartha Stwart Show canceled!!!!!!!! It was the only thing on Halmark I watched . I cannot be alone in this !!!!!!!!
I MISS MARTHA THIS SEPTEMBER ! I don’t go to Hallmark Channel for anything else.
What? No Martha? No Mark Marrone? No reason to watch the Hallmark channel–certainly not their lame movies.
Absolutely, NO need to watch the Hallmark channel anymore. Martha Stewart and Emeril were my only reasons for tuning in. Occassinaly, Lucinda Scala Quinn when she cooked something other than Italian. Also, what’s the deal with Lucinda’s website on
Hallmark? Why can’t I click on an episode and access the recipes? Here’s hoping Martha and the rest of her produced shows show up somewhere else very soon.
what is wrong with the hallmark channel? everyone I know watches Martha Stewart! Where do you get your sources? Maybe its because we are women! So anything we like is unimportant! Martha gives us good ideas in which can tweek to our lifestyles, thats the great way she helps the average woman in her daily life with family and friends. I hope everyone will reconsider this travisty! Thank You——-MARTHA FOR EVERYTHING YOU GIVEN US.
OWN…..maybe Martha should consider her own network like someone else we all loved!!!!
Im very sadden to hear The Martha Stewart show has been cancelled…. I hope and pray she lands on a new network…. Her show is very educational and her guest are always enjoyable….I guess all I can hope for is a change of this decision !! REALLY… Looks like I won’t need to watch Hallmark channel anymore….Marie over Martha… Give me a break!!
I agree 100% with this comment. Hallmark is certainly missing an opportunity that is not offered by any one else. Bring back the excellent decorating/craft shows. Martha has been the best for a very long time and is still relevant. I for one will not watch Marie Osmond under any circumstances. The corporate decision to replace Martha with Marie shows how out of touch and desperate Hallmark is. We have plenty of talk shows and nothing now that brings quality information to the day time audience.
I have watched Martha Stewart for years. Truly hope this is not the end of this programming. I have enjoyed the programming that courages homemaking that makes it fun and exciting.
This has been my all time favorite show,I have watched her since the show began,I will miss seeing Martha and all her wonderful dishes and creative ideas.
I am so bummed! I watch Martha every day along with Petkeeping and Emeril’s Table – I love these shows and pretty much everything Martha does… If these go there will be nothing on Hallmark for me (not interested at all in reruns of The Waltons)!
It is a shame that Martha Stewarts show is being cancelled. She does a great job of teaching and installing confidence in those f us who would be cooks, bakers, gardeners or crafters, whether you are skilled or a novice. She is a savvy businesswoman and I think a lot of people resent her success. I admire the way in which she served her prison sentence, which I thought was way out of proportion to the crime, helped her fellow prisoners and continued to move forward without any ” poor, pitiful me” . I have heard she could e nicer… Read more »
We watch in Australia, even though we receive programmes 1 year behind US. I am truly sorry the show has been cancelled. It was such an inspiring show to get you motivated into cooking, gardening, crafts, etc. I have bought products because I saw them on the show. So disappointing. Please, bring it back.
I am going to really miss the show! Her creative influence made my home a good thing for many years. The cast and her dogs were always pure joy and giggles. I hope Martha finds another home soon!
Another unappreciated educator. Why do all the embarrassing reality shows continue on air and a wonderful show , as Martha Stewart, is cancelled ? It makes no sense. I have watched since she has been on air. I have lost track of how many years but have learned more from Martha than my own Mother. She will be truly missed by her viewers and New York City is loosing their best tour guide.
I’m so sorry that Martha’s show it to be cancelled. I have watched her ever since she came to TV land, I still order her magazine, and enjoy the program every day. We have so many negative programs, on these days, that it makes it hard to watch television. Her show so educational in all aspects, it’s hard to beat. I hope she will continue to do and have something else that we can look up to and not be afraid to have our children by side.
