After 17 years on the air, Montel Williams and his talk show have been cancelled. But fans can take heart as neither are leaving the airwaves for the foreseeable future.
The Montel Williams Show first hit the airwaves on September 30, 1991 in New York and a few other markets. It was picked up for syndication the following year. The show generally focuses on uncontroversial subjects, personal stories, and the readings of self-proclaimed psychic Sylvia Browne. The show was nominated for Daytime Emmys in both 2001 and 2002. A decorated member of naval intelligence, this was the first show for host Williams. He received a Daytime Emmy in 1996 and was nominated in 2002.
CBS Television Distribution has announced that the Montel show is ending its run after 17 years on the air. The syndicated talk show’s fate was reportedly sealed when a number of FOX-owed stations decided against renewing the show for another year. Show production will continue through the rest of this season so new episodes should air for some time.
Though production is shutting down, the show isn’t going away anytime soon. CBS is offering local stations a “Best of Montel” compilation series for the 2008-08 season. It will feature 52 weeks of “some of the most exciting episodes” pulled from the talk show’s long run.
John Nogawski, president and COO of CBS TV Distribution, said, “We have been honored to have ‘Montel’ as a part of our family for the past 17 years, and we’re very excited that ‘Montel’ will live on through these ‘best of’ episodes.”
Of the cancellation, Williams was quoted as saying, “I can’t say thank you enough to those who’ve welcomed me into their homes for the past 17 years. It has been both an honor and a joy.” Stay tuned!

I’m so surprized that The Montel Williams Show has been cancelled. It is the only talk show of any substance at all and the only one that I watch faithfully. What bad judgement to cancel such a great show which helps so many people. We keep Dr Phil and cancel Montel- what’s wrong with this picture….
So sorry you have been cancelled. I so look forward to watching you everyday Montel. You are a very compasionate caring man. I wish all the best in the years to come and I hope that you may appear again on another network. Also loved the shows when Sylvia Brown was there. You have helped soooo many people. Thank you for the years we have had watching you. How can a network just decide to drop a show that helps so many folks in need??
P.S.
I just felt so moved today that I went to my computer to try and find an E-mail address to just say thank you to Montell and this place was all I could find .
The world should follow his lead and give all they can .
I hate to see you go Montel, yours was the only show I looked forward to watching on my days off of work…You are a wonderful soul, good luck in all that you do and continue to take care of yourself.
I can not exactly say that I am a fan of the Montell Williams show , because I really have not had the chance to watch it as it obviously airs when I am usually at work . Today I am off sick from work and I happened to catch his show , I just would like to say this man had me in tears watching all the good things he has done for people . For one thing I am never moved like that , I am a 38 year old male, Married ,with one boy. A lot of… Read more »
I am soo upset hearing that your show is coming to an end. You have proved what a wonderful kind hearted person you are. Even though you’ve had your own health problems, you still went on helping so many other people and their families through the years. To me you are a true example of how every person should care about, and help others selflessly. May God bless you and your family!
In fact, Montel, your next book could be called…
Detox Our Government
or D.O.G
Montel, you are a rarity. Never have I witnessed someone with so much love, honesty and sensitivity. We are truly blessed to be touched by your wisdom and selflessness. My heart is breaking that my favorite show is being cancelled. I hope you can now concentrate on running for President in 2012..
You have done such a good job at cleaning up our bodies..now it is time to clean up our country!!
While entertaining, you always felt the main reason Montel wanted to be on the air was to see what good he could do for people that sincerely needed it. Anymore if the program is not sexually oriented or just plain tacky by dialogue, it doesn’t seem to fit. I enjoyed Montel very much and I so hope there is something bigger and better out there for him. I also wish for him the best of health. I am so sick of what is being called Reality programs, they literally make me sick and I wouldn’t watch one, if paid. Much… Read more »
It’s things like this that gives me just one more reason to be glad that I left the “land of the free” and high tailed it the hell out of there and into Canada.. where you still have the freedom of speech. Kind of reminds me of the whole John Lennon thing.. hmmm.
