ABC has cancelled one daytime series and renewed two others. Fans of General Hospital can breathe easy, at least for a little while.
The network has confirmed that The Revolution, their ratings-challenged talk show, will go off the air on July 6th. The TV series debuted in January and took the place of One Life to Live. Hosted by Tim Gunn, Harley Pasternak, Ty Pennington, Jennifer Ashton, and Tiffanie Davis, The Revolution has been a ratings disappointment and has been averaging about 1.3 million viewers according to Deadline.
Meanwhile, both General Hospital and The Chew have been renewed for the 2012-13 season. While General Hospital’s viewer numbers have come down over the years, the ratings have shown signs of improvement. In late March, GH averaged 2.3 million viewers while The Chew drew 2.2 million. The Revolution pulled in just 1.3 million.
Katie Couric’s new talk show, Katie, is slated to premiere on September 10th and will air at 3pm on most stations. Until that happens, ABC will fill the timeslot with an hour-long afternoon version of Good Morning America, tentatively titled GMA in the Afternoon.
While the alphabet network hasn’t said as much, they are obviously still searching for low-cost programming to fill their daytime hours. While the renewal of General Hospital has ensured that the venerable soap opera will reach its 50th anniversary — on April 1, 2013 — there’s certainly no guarantees beyond that.
What do you think? Did ABC make the right decision to renew General Hospital? Do you think it will reach its 51st year?

General Hospital gets renewed while All My Children&One Life To Live remain dead???GH has been a huge boring dreadful disappointment ever since the mob took center stage! I don’t want any soaps going off the air but in my opinion if ABCD was hell bent on ridding itself of a soap General Hospital should’ve been the first to walk the plank!!That show sucks!!! I’m thrilled to know The Reveloution’s been canceled. Now ABCD should wise up& toss The Chew on the trash heap too!!
i watch general hospital from when it first came on, I LOVE IT. SO I WISH THEY WOULD JUST LEAVE IT ALONEAND BRING BACK OLTL , AND AMC.
bring back One life to live
Ok, to be totally honest, I have not watched GH since the early 80’s when Luke & Laura ruled the world (and all that cool mad scientist stuff was going on) But I am glad to see that it has survived another year. I think the viewers have shown that we don’t want to see any more soaps taken off the air. I know I will completely stop watching daytime tv if they touch Days of our Lives (which I have watched since I was home sick in Sept. of 1980) I do watch a couple of talk shows (The… Read more »
Absolutely! Long live General Hospital.
I am not a big fan of General Hospitals but i am glad they didnt take it off the air.One life to live was my favorite.I am glad that the Revolution was taken off.I want them to bring back All My Children & One Life To Live!!! And while your at it bring back Guiding Light!! That was my all time favorite!!!!!
Thank God they left GH alone. Forget Couric and the Chew. Bring back One Life to Live and All My Children.
A Katie Couric talk show. I am actually glad that I have to work days.
WE WANT OUR OLTL BACK!!!
I think it’s a bad idea i think soap operas are depressing while thrombocytopenia is very .motivating I’m gonna miss it Don’t coun on me watching soap operas
If GH goes, so does abc from my television!
Of course they made the right decision. I have watched GH since 1965, and life without it, would be some getting used too.
If the ratings don’t improve, no it will not see the 51st year, and if the writing does not get better the ratings will not improve.
We can only hope. Television shows have their run and when it is time to say farewell, it can be a difficult transition.
There’s a reason GH has survived this long, and if the ABC folks would get behind GH, it could last indefinitely. It seems they were almost hoping it would fail. What gives, ABC? There are well over a million loyal GH viewers, you just need to track ratings differently now that many people watch it on the internet, SoapNet, or others (like Hulu). No one is home at 3 P.M. anymore to sit in front of the tube, but that doesn’t mean no one is watching.
Very happy to hear GH will be staying on the air I’ve watched it for 32 years. The revolution is so stupid. Glad to see it go. To bad you smug Ty pennington.now get rid of the chew.
YEEEEEAAAHH!!! I get ‘General Hospital’ AND Katie…Every Day! That’s Great news!
Yeah general hospital. The revolution wad a bad idea from the start. They need to bring back one life to live. As for Katie. She is wrong for a day time slot. Just me people are not that into her. She can’t pull ratings alone.. maybe a weekend show for her may work. Weekend viewing needs work.
