It’s not like there was any question but NBC has confirmed that there won’t be a second season of The Slap, their low-rated Thursday night mini-series. The series ended as it began — with poor ratings.
On The Slap TV show, a birthday celebration comes to an abrupt halt when a man slaps another couple’s misbehaving child. It’s a small action that ends up deeply affecting all involved. The cast for the mini-series includes Peter Sarsgaard, Thandie Newton, Uma Thurman, Makenzie Leigh, Zachary Quinto, Dylan Schombing, Thomas Sadoski, Melissa George, Brian Cox, Lucas Hedges, Maria Tucci, Marin Ireland, and Penn Badgley.
The series got off to a very poor start in the ratings in February with the debut garnering a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 5.13 million viewers. The numbers took a big fall in week two, dropping more than 25% in the all-important demo.
The network cancelled their Thursdays at 10pm series, Allegiance, after five episodes and shifted The Slap to that later timeslot to finish out its run. The eight episodes ended up averaging a low 0.8 rating in the demo with 3.62 million viewers.
NBC promoted The Slap as a mini-series but, if it had been a ratings smash, they surely would have figured out a way to bring it back for a second season — potentially like “limited series” like Fargo or the UK’s Broadchurch. With such terrible ratings, that wasn’t going to happen and the network has confirmed that last night’s episode is indeed the last of the series.
What do you think? Did you like The Slap? Why do you think the ratings weren’t better? Would you have watched a second season of these characters?
This show certainly was dreadful with zero intrigue; the ratings and producers got it right.
I definitely would have watched a second season of The Slap and am very angry at its cancellation. Great TV shows with great acting often need a chance to catch on. Take Seinfeld for example. Shame on you , NBC.
I agree with comments from Johanna! I was hooked on The Slap – the title alone made you want to watch it to see what “The Slap” was all about. Great cast and really good story line- sooooo very disappointed there will not be a second season. Who are these raters anyway, what do they know – not much obviously. NBC really needs to get it together, as this has become a habit with them. As soon as we get to like something, they yank it from us and tell that it was due to ratings – they are so… Read more »
Are you f!$&ng serious!? What a disrespect to the viewers. You don’t leave us hanging like that! Fix the damn! Script or whatever you have to do and give us Season 2! The Slap is awesome serie “rating” my ass! Nobody asked me and I ‘m the rating and I watched the 8 episodes. Finish it lazy incompetent morons in NBC that’s the reason ABC kick your ass always! If you brainless writers can figure it out I can tell you some ideas to make it more awesome or better yet ask Shonda Rhimes for help. He is awesome, professional… Read more »
I definitely think the title had a huge impact. I almost didn’t tune in because of it. Sure, the incident with the slap got the ball rolling but this show had so many other things going on. There was great acting and chemistry in this cast. It’s a shame NBC didn’t know how to successfully market this show.
Same here. It looked like a child abuse thing. Glad I gave it a chance because it was fantastic
Loved it! Very cool vibe. So sad their is no second season. Really enjoyed the actors too.
garbage…lame garbage…belongs on lifetime…
I tried the first episode. It was so agonizingly bad that it was a struggle just to stay awake. I made it through, but swore never to return.
Im so disappointed they canceled this series. I was really into it. Sad face.
I was a little skeptical at first but each time I watched it I started really getting into it. I wish it would come back. I do think the title of the show had a lot to do with people not even tuning in.
i just finished watching the season on Demand. Disappointed that there will not be a second season. It has a great cast. The first few episodes hooked me. The next few seemed s bit less interesting and drawn out. The lady few episodes hooked me again!!
So disappointing! The writing, directing, cast all excellent. This was a Ken Olin project.. (thirty something) and like that show this had a cool vibe. So sorry there’s no Season II maybe America wants more same ol’ same ol’ with yet more mindless reality shows… Cheers from Canada
I really liked it. Just googled to see when the second season would be. Was disappointed to learn its not coming back. Actors were great and the story line. It was evolving well.
The title doomed the show from the jump. When I first heard the title it made me curious and crack up laughing all at the same time!! Storyline was not bad at all but I too was wondering the whole time how could it be sustained? Powerhouse cast and acting!!
Really too bad. My family and I really enjoyed the program the short time it was with us. We absolutely wanted to see more episodes/seasons!
I just noticed it’s off the air, but I only watched 1 episode and predicted it would be pulled within 5. I’m glad it made it longer than I expected. Peter S is a great actor who should never jump from great roles like Blue Jasmine to tripe like this. Uma, well she’s Uma, she’ll get lots of great roles. I’m sure the 2 of them were relieved with the news it’s over.
