Fans of AMC’s The Son series have been waiting since the first season’s finale (which aired in June 2017) for the return of the Western drama. We’ve now learned that season two will begin airing on Saturday, April 27th, at 9 PM. There will be 10 episodes once again and, it turns out, those will also be the end of the show. There won’t be a third season.
Here’s the relevant portion of AMC’s press announcement about The Son:
The Son
Saturday, April 27 at 9:00 p.m. ET/8:00 p.m. CT
Based on Philipp Meyer’s New York Times best-selling and Pulitzer Prize finalist novel of the same name, season two of The Son concludes the journey of the iconic “First Son of Texas.” Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) will stop at nothing to secure his legacy against the backdrop of the nascent oil industry of 1917. His tools are deceit, fraud and murder — weapons he wields with the effortless skill of the Comanche warrior he once was.But the biggest challenge he faces will be quelling a civil war under his own roof, triggered by his idealistic son Pete (Henry Garrett). Eli knows the ultimate prize of American dynasty is nearly in his grasp, and time is running out. Meanwhile, in 1851, young Eli (Jacob Lofland) is now married and a respected warrior among the Comanches, but tragedy forces him into a leadership position as the vast Comanche empire crumbles around him. Broadening the scope, a 1988 timeline is introduced, bringing the McCullough saga into the more immediate past. Here, at age 85, Eli’s granddaughter Jeanne Anne McCullough (Lois Smith) is confronted with a long-buried family secret.
The Son is produced by AMC Studios and Sonar Entertainment. Showrunner and writer Kevin Murphy, director Kevin Dowling, author Philipp Meyer, and Sonar Entertainment’s Tom Lesinski and Jenna Santoianni are Executive Producers. In addition to Brosnan, Smith, Garrett and Lofland, the series also stars Paola Núñez, Zahn McClarnon, Jess Weixler, David Wilson Barnes, Sydney Lucas, James Parks, Elizabeth Frances, Shane Graham and Kathryn Prescott.
What do you think? Are you looking forward to watching the second season of The Son TV show on AMC? Are you sorry that there won’t be a third season?
I am devastated over this cancellation! It was so great to see Pierce Brosnan in a leading role again. Love him! I love the story. I don’t understand why this has been cancelled. I hope that AMC will reconsider and bring this great series BACK!
We liked this show. It was a long wait only to have it cancelled but obviously there is more going on then we know about of why it was canceled.
Great show! My husband and I love this series! Why is it being cancelled? I hope AMC will reconsider.
Very sorry to hear of it’s cancellation. I felt it was a wonderful show.
This is very upsetting some of us are tired of cop dramas and reality tv we want GOOD entertainment not the crap mostly airing today. HBO did the same thing with the series DEADWOOD. Some of us from the older generation still enjoy westerns but it seems all the programming nowadays is geared towards morons who wouldn’t know actual entertainment if it bit them. If it doesn’t involve sex or drugs it doesn’t stay on TV long. BRING BACK THE SON SOME OF US ACTUALLY ENJOYED IT! No reply needed I already have my answer THANKS AMC another good one… Read more »
Very disappointed with the decision to cancel this series. This is one of the best shows on TV. Entertaining, with both great historical and human aspects. The producers should reconsider.
The son is a great series. It’s very disappointing that it’s being cancelled. Walking dead is getting worse, bad lands ended on a terrible ending that leaves room for a season 3 but no AMC keeps canceling great shoes. Guess I’ll turn the channel. For good
I am so disappointed there won’t be any more seasons! TV has become a predictable assemble of shows with no variety, every time there is a show with a good storyline or different from the other boring shows, it is discontinued. Highly disappointed! It would be nice is a company like Netflix picked up the series!
Sorry to read that there will not be a season 3
Great show, well written, wonderful characters and excellent actors! AMC you make us wait forever for season 2 and now this? I’m truly sad….
one of the best shows on tv don’t understand why it is being cancelled
AMC needs it head examined. Great story and scenery. Better than most of the crap they air.
Why are they cancelling all the good shows? They put stupid shows on. Remember there are viewers older than 25 that want good TV shows like The Son, Cony, etc. The networks dont want to show anything real or could be real. Is Google & Amazon buying you to cancel them? This is a great show & will be missed. Guess networks will put another stupid reality or something stupid on in its place. This started several years ago, anything of value, true or could be true because of the world we live in they always cancel. Great b4 long… Read more »
Sad to see it go
I’m very sad to hear that the Son will be ending. I thought that it was a great show.
This series was initially hard to get hooked on. But, after a few episodes we were excited about the characters. We wish it were not cancelled and wonder why it is.
When they do air season two, will there be a conclusion? If there is a conclusion, will it be a ‘hurry up …let’s be done kind …of season? Because if that is how they are going to end it, we would rather not even waste our time watching it. That kind of writing is a major disappointment and is not worthy of the previous exceptional writing in the series.
