There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

TV networks dont ever seem to care about the viewers. they only care about ad revenue. i never watched CBS until the unit. now i can stop waiting for the unit maybe they will bring it back in 2-3 years like Family Guy when it was cancelled. Bull SH!+.
What? By far the best show on TV. My family watched this show together, it didn’t matter that when they changed nights, we had to use the dvr, we just watched it the next night. Horriable decission to cancel this show! My husband(age 37) and son(age 14) will be totally upset at this news.
y did you end the unit it was brill we are guttered nothing to compare.
felt like they where family.
I tuned in to CBS for two shows last year, the unit and ncis. I am less than 55 years old. the cancellation of the unit just cost you viewers of your station.
I can’t believe they are pulling this show. It was the best original show on the major networks. USA Network continues to come up with great new shows like Burn Notice and CBS pulls one of the only winners they had? Terrible decision, I have no reason to watch CBS now.
I live in Australia and I am considerably younger than 55 years of age. I am hoping that The Unit has not been cancelled as I think that there was something unique about this show that had me transfixed and eager for its next episode. The Unit was definitely a programme that I looked forward to watching.
please reconcider canceling the unit
I watched one tv program a week. Just one, the unit. being a PM manager at a restaurant my nights are always busy. i wrote my schedule around when the unit was on TV. oh well, the girlfriend will be happier now, but the pizza place will probable miss my weekly business too.
i think this is a bad decision, but who am I? just a viewer.
CBS…WTF? you guys suck. The Unit was one of the best dramas on the tube.
AGE 26
I was looking forward to watching the next season, it was pretty much the only thing I watched on CBS. Look on the bright side I guess, now that I will be ignoring all CBS programming I will have one less channel to filter through on the guide.
i love the unit and im not 55 im 24
I really liked this show and was looking forward to the next season.
I am really disappointed in this decision.
There was not much else on CBS that I would watch.
NO, NO, NO ! Don’t let this stay cancelled ! We cannot tolerate another “reality” show, another inane T&A show, another another idiotic 20-something-type-show, another insult-your-parents and everyone-is-stupid-but-us, absolutely selfish people shows !!!
I’M BEGGING AND I DO NOT BEG !!
You have got to be kidding me! CBS has produced some of the more nonsensical programming over the last decade! The Unit has value and substance. Last time I checked we were dealing with two wars and terrorism throughout the globe. What a simple thought! CBS would actually support a show that has real time and actual meaning to millions of people. Oh! But, Big Brother is such a good show! Ugghh! What a bad decision to cancel the show! Obviously ratings mean more to CBS than a show that provides quality, commitment, standing for something, VALUES! You have lost… Read more »
You have got to be kidding me! With all of the nonsensical programming CBS has on it’s network; they cancel arguably the best show it has produced in the last decade.
Whom ever is in charge of its programming decisions; you got this one WRONG! In an era where we live in a multicultural and diverse society with precious few lead minority characters ASTOUNDING! We have lost my household as viewers!
You should be embarrassed!
