There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

Terrible news I am 40 and love the show. The team work was fantastic.
This was the only show I watch on the so called big three. Now, I will have no show to watch on the big three.
I will send an email to Fox maybe they will pick it up.
The big three has no clue.
Hmmm… What am I going to watch now…? It was down to two shows. The NBC one I knew was ending, but I had been hoping that The Unit would somehow make it back to air this fall. Sadly that seems not to be the case. Oh well, looks like the kids have another few hours worth of space to use on the DVR from now on…
I went surfing the net to see when season 5 is going to start and the time. I am saddened to find out it was canceled. This is the only show I really enjoy and recorded every week. I refuse to watch the crap and garbage on CBS. I will turn the channel more now that The Unit is not on CBS. Come on…think about what the viewers want …not what makes $.
This sucks! TV has really gone to hell with good shows getting cancelled left and right. This is truly an engaging and well written show. Please save it.
My husband & I and lots of our friends love this show. And we aren’t old! We are in our early 30’s. So sick of most of the stuff on T.V. these days. Please bring it back!!!
One of the best series on TV, it should not be cancelled. I would watch it on any channel.
My husband and I are very disappointed to read this show is to be cancelled. We only watch 2 TV series per week as it is and the other show is on ABC – if there is nothing like The Unit then we won’t be watching much TV. Bye, bye CBS.
I can’t believe that The Unit was cancelled. If the shows producers were to look at the facts they would have seen that by moving the show to a different night other then Sunday after football would have worked to their and the shows advantage. But most these executives don’t think of what the viewing people really want to see.
I will really miss this show and suggest they reconsider their decisions.
Im 29 and faithfully watch the Unit almost everyday . I own all 4 seasons on disc and honestly there isnt a day that goes by that iu dont watch 3-10 episodes and when i finish the 4th series i start them all over again . U guys need to do a 5th season on a Disc set , hell a 6th and 7th would be great aswell . There was only 1 show i would ever make time for on Network TV and that was the Unit , unitl u guys decided to cancel it . Good Going way… Read more »
Great program. I hope they reconsider bringing it back.
I’ve been a follower of the show since the first day.
I can’t believe you would cancel this series. It is by far one of the very best series CBS has ever aired. You should really consider bringing it back because your making a mistake by taking it off the air. I also wish you would run the old episodes so those of us that are true fans can see them again!!!!!!!
I am ex-military and was assigned to a “black ops” unit. I can tell you that this show was more reality than those stupid arse ‘reality shows.’ What the hell was CBS thinking? Obviously they were not. It will be a long time before my TV is tuned to CBS.

I am 40 and my wife and kids as well as my in-laws watched the show faithfully. We are tired of reality TV crap.
I can’t believe they took The Unit off air. Me and my husband are so upset that I just emailed CBS and told them what I thought of them taking off the best TV show on air and my husband will do the same. My husband was in Iraq when the show first came on and I’d taped the episodes for him and we’d watch them together when he’d come home…he loved this show! I hope all of you that posted your disappointment in the show’s cancellation will also write to CBS. I do hope as another poster suggested that… Read more »
