There’s another casualty on network TV. CBS’ military drama, The Unit, has been cancelled after four seasons on the air.
The Unit revolves around an elite military unit and their civilian loved ones. The series features the talents of Dennis Haysbert, Regina Taylor, Audrey Marie Anderson, Robert Patrick, Max Martini, Abby Brammell, Michael Irby, Scott Foley, Demore Barnes, Alyssa Shafer, Danielle Hanratty, Kavita Patil, and Rebecca Pidgeon.
Created by acclaimed director and writer David Mamet, the series debuted in mid-season 2006. An average audience of 15.5 million viewers ensured a second season for the drama but year two didn’t go as well, attracting 11.1 million viewers. The show has continued to decline in the ensuing years and season four has averaged an audience of 9.67 million. Though the overall viewership isn’t too low, the series does skew older. The average age of The Unit’s viewership is about 55.
The series has been “on the bubble” for awhile and many took it as a bad sign when showrunner Shawn Ryan signed on to helm FOX’s Lie to Me. Ryan however maintained that he would continue on both shows if The Unit was renewed. He’d previously performed double duty while working concurrently on The Unit and The Shield.

Like most of the networks’ actions these days, the decision to renew or cancel came down to finances. CBS had asked for all of its shows to reduce their budgets. The Unit is actually already cheaper to produce than it looks. Shot primarily in Southern California, it costs less than $3 million per episode to produce. That’s about half as expensive as other primetime dramas.
A couple weeks ago, Haysbert told the LA Times that he was unsure if he wanted the show to come back if it meant making too many creative and salary concessions. He said, “There are a number of factors that go into whether I want it back or not. It’s been a great ride and, if I don’t work with these people again, I’ll certainly play golf with them.”
In an age when the networks and studios have to watch every dollar, they’ve all been favoring renewing shows that are created by sister or in-house production companies. Since 20th Century Fox TV produces the show, the network wouldn’t benefit if the show went into syndication.
Prior to the cancellation news, Gary Newman, chairman of The Unit’s studio, said, “For the CBS viewer, this show is unique. The audience may not be huge, but there’s going to be enormous disappointment if it goes off and it’s replaced with one more procedural or forensics show.”

I agree that too much was left for next season for there to not be a next season. Also, how many times was the scheduled airing of this program pre-empted? A little consistancy would probably have been a good thing, as well as another night and time…??? Very realistic and high energy for the good guys/our fighting military men and women… Go figure???!!!
cbs- with the exception of army wives (another military show), you have all I watch…Numbers, NCIS, NCIS L.A. 9coming), Flashpoint, The Unit…Law enforcement/military feel good programing. How could you cancel The Unit?!!! Especially when production costs are half that of other shows?!!!
I can’t believe it; one of only five programs that I regularly watch and greatly look forward to viewing. Definitely better than big brother, wife swap, survivor, or a number of other such incredibly stupid shows that I would never watch!!! You could not pay me to watch such stupidy!!!
Can’t believe The Unit was cancelled. More stupid venues like Big Brother! Unbelieveable
You could see the writing on the wall when they moved to Sun. night. Someone wanted it to fail because it is too much like the real life Blackwater which is surrounded by controversy.
It’s amazing to me how the “big wigs” choose which shows to cancel. This is s a great show and the actors were wonderful! I would miss Sunday Night Football to watch this show week after week and I was really looking forward to Season 5. I really dont’ like it when you get hooked and they leave the viewers hanging!
CBS cances a show because it has declining ratings???!! It’s already acknowledged to be one of the lesser expensive shows to produce, and it is in a bad time slot. Put it in a more viewable time slot, and watch the ratings go back up, you idiots. There’s a lot of crap on TV these days, and I simply have gone to books, and other entertainment for a more satisfying idle time. More shows like THE UNIT will be needed to get me back to the tube. ronniep
I liked the unit. I guess it did not have a gay story line so CBS had to cut the only show that didn’t have one. Now what are real men going to watch?
Best show on TV. Not over done or as macho as so many crime shows come across as. It was real with real warmth.
My wife & I both at different times when we were not together thought we saw that The Unit was being picked up by WOR-TV byt so far have not seen detail on it. It was a TV advertisement for it….starting this month – mid-month Sept 09. Does aanyone know anything about it?
I can’t believe it – this was one of the few shows worth watching on TV. What a bunch of junk you’ve left us with. “the mentalist:” – you’ve got to be kidding? Maybe if you hadn’t moved it to 10:00 Sunday night, more people would have watched.
Very upset that the unit is being cancelled. Watched it all the time. Execellent show to watch. Take off Big Brothers, Sisters and all that other crap and put back on something worth watching. Take off How I Met your Mother, New Adventures of Old Christine and Two and Half Men to keep the Unit on.

Thanks and spread the word.
We need good entertainment like this back on out screens.
I agree with the 99%; The Unit should NOT have been cancelled. Dennis Haysbert, Robert Patrick and the entire cast are great actors and deserve better. I believe that CBS will lose market share over this bad decision.
Idiots – agreat W E B Griffin or Clancy story line and it gets canned with all the other junk on CBS – guess I’ just move on to other action show in this time slot.
