After a four week run, FOX says the honeymoon is over for David E. Kelly’s The Wedding Bells series.
The Wedding Bells follows the Bell sisters, Annie (KaDee Strickland), Jane (Teri Polo) and Sammy Bell (Sarah Jones), who inherited “The Wedding Palace” following their parents’ divorce. The staff also includes Jane’s husband and company COO Russell Hawkins (Benjamin King), photographer David Conlon (Michael Landes), and wedding singer Ralph Snow (Chris Williams).
The series debuted on March 7th on FOX following American Idol. Over 12.4 million watched the initial episode. That sounds impressive until you realize that the comedy lost almost 16 million from Idol. Once Bells started in its new Friday night timeslot, viewership quickly fell even further. The most recent episode attracted only 4.5 million.
Production was shut down yesterday following the completion of the seventh episode. Four episodes have aired thus far and FOX maintains that the remaining three will see the light of day. The Wedding Bells remains on the schedule this week but was already scheduled to be pre-empted next week (for an airing of the movie White Chicks). It’s unlikely that the series will return.
A spokesperson for FOX said, “While we’ve been pleased with the show creatively, and David’s writing was first-rate, (Bells) just didn’t secure the ratings we’d hoped for.” Stay tuned!
I also enjoyed this show and did a web search when it was no longer being recorded by my computer. It seems that BRAVO gets all the best shows now that other networks reject so I hope it shows up there in the future. FOX network doesn’t have a lot of really good quality shows only ones that are on other channels too. And to push the time around like that, how are people supposed to keep track of when it’s on to watch it?????
We don’t have a tv guide pasted to our foreheads
I too am indescribably disappointed in the show’s cancellation, and – like so many others – found out about this travesty only after googling to see if I could find anything to explain why, having re-organised my Friday night routine to watch what had become my favorite show on television, I was greeted by “White Chicks”!!! Something needs to be done to bring this wonderfully entertaining show back…please!!!!!!!
Great show! Why is it that they cancel an entertaining, funny show and keep inane reality shows on?
I’m MAD TOO! We loved this show–finally something funny on Friday night to watch! I’m so sick of cop shows, murders, etc! Can’t we have more funny shows! What’s wrong with 4.5 million! That’s alot of people watching ads and possibly buying products!
Hilarious show! Sad to see it go, no show on Friday makes it. Put it on a Thursday, or Monday night?
BRING THIS SHOW BACK!!!!!!!! Finally a show to look forward to on Friday night for some of the baby boomers who might be home! It’s light-hearted and extremely entertaining and makes me miss even Alley McBeal!!! Please do something! Thanks
I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS SHOW WAS CANCELLED. THERE MUST BE A MISTAKE. THE AUDIENCE THAT WATCHES THIS SHOW PAY THE BILLS FOR THE AUDIENCE THAT WATCHES AMERICAN IDOL. YOU MAY WISH TO RECONSIDER.
Fox says the show didn’t secure the ratings it had hoped for. ???? Well give the show a chance and don’t put it on Friday night and against other well known shows. Give it a chance to build a following.
Please leave us something on the tele that we can watch and let the burdens of the day dwindle away. Me and my husband both enjoyed this show. Its high time adults got some good television for a change.
I cannot believe that this great show was canceled. I really looked forward each week to watch “wedding bells”
It was a show without the smut and violence that the whole family could enjoy. So please try putting this on another night and see what happens. If not, Thanks to the cast and the writers for a great show that should still be shown.
I have been looking for this show. I love it. Fox had it on, on the wrong night. Put it on any other night and it will be a big hit.
It’s very seldom that I enjoy a TV show enough to actually follow it on a regular basis. This one, I did because I really enjoyed it. I hate to see it go.
We agree. Fox has made grave errors on this one. First, in moving it to an undesirable timeslot on Friday night. Friday night is “going out” night, even for those of us in our “older years.” Secondly, in cancelling it. Not since Allie McBeal has my family so enjoyed such witty writting. It was just downright fun! Why is it that the good ones have to go by the wayside? Fox, you should bring it back at a more desirable time and give it a second chance! ccc
It would be a shame to cancel such a witty show like the Wedding Bells, but to keep adding game shows like “Are you smarter than a fifth grader?”… It doesn’t take the intelligence of an 11 year old to figure this one out.
a very good show, entertaining and all. the public likes it, why do you not like it? Better than a lot of other net work shows.
