Last May, NBC announced that it would be adding two new medical shows. Trauma would begin airing in the Fall and Mercy would come in early 2010. That plan got messed up when production on Parenthood, another new show, was delayed, and Mercy was brought in early to take its place.
With two new medical dramas on the network, many suspected there was going to be one too many. A few months later, one is struggling to survive and the other has been effectively cancelled.
Trauma revolves around a group of first responder paramedics in San Francisco. The high-action series is populated by an ensemble cast that includes Derek Luke, Cliff Curtis, Anastasia Griffith, Kevin Rankin, Aimee Garcia, Billy Lush, Jamey Sheridan, and Taylor Kinney.
The drama has had problems attracting viewers from the beginning. Its premiere only attracted 6.68 million viewers and a 2.2/5 rating/share of the 18-49 demographic. The following week, the numbers sank to 5.36 million and a 1.7/4. The numbers have been rising slowly since then but not by much. Monday’s episode hit a post-premiere high of 5.77 million and a 1.9/5, putting the show in fourth place for the timeslot.
To no surprise, NBC has decided not to order additional episodes of Trauma. While all 13 episodes of the series will be aired, the network won’t be ordering any more. It’s unknown if the cast and crew will be able to give the show any closure by the last episode.
What do you think? Are you disappointed that Trauma is ending or should it have been cancelled awhile ago?
UPDATE: Trauma returning with new episodes.

I am so sad to see Trauma go! It is the only show that I actually like! All the other shows are just the same old things over and over again. It has a great time slot, and it gives me time to put my kids in bed and be able to sit down and watch it peacefully. If I miss it, I just go online and watch it. This is terribly upsetting!
that stinks. trauma is the best show ever. it feels like real life and all the actors are great. they should stop airing some other show not trauma. I will miss that show.
Are you crazy Miami medical will never beat Trauma, Trauma is the greatest show in the world. Miami medical is like all the other Docter shows (Greys anatomy, Mercy, ER) they are all about what docters do, not paramedics! I looked forward to it every monday, like it just totally made my week, i havent missed one show of it and i wouldnt mis it for anything. My friend and i even bought the first half of the season for our I-pods and watch it non-stop. After high school i am going to school to be a paramedic so watching… Read more »
I am so disappointed!! Love, love, love this show. I think this year was one of the greatest one for new shows. There were so many, I guess people can’t watch them all but I think one viewing of this show and they would be hooked. Surely another network or cable channel will pick it up — maybe someone like Showtime or HBO — then they could expand on the characters and storyline significantly. Excellent, excellent cast.!
Each time NBC puts on a new show, you get yourself so involved in the show, the station does not do due diligence in commerical hipe to advertise the show and once you love the characters and storyline, NBC cancels. This is the worst station on the air. They need to bring back Trauma and cancel most of the other sitcoms which are getting old, are old, are repeats and nobody cares about. NBC is lame.
Actually, you’re right. Miami Medical is on CBS after Medium. Maybe since this show debuted later in the season, more people will start watching it because all the other shows will be on hiatus.
Have you guys seen the new show called “Miami Medical” on friday nights? It’s on ABC and is very similar to Trauma in that Trauma shows what happens to the patient before they get to the hospital and Miami Medical shows what happens when they get there. Of course, ABC knows a great show when they see if. If Trauma was on ABC it wouldn’t be getting cancelled. The heads of NBC are just stupid!
@Durelle: It’s actually on CBS and isn’t doing very well either.
Who cares about what happens while they are at the hospital we want to see it on scene!
I am very disappointed that Trauma is being cancelled. I can’t believe the first episode didn’t draw in enough viewers. If the first episode had low ratings it was the networks problem not the shows because it was AWESOME.
Ya it was the networks problems they barely even showed comercials or anything, the publicity on it was horrible every time i talked about it in front of my friends they were like what is that i was like only the greatest show EVER!!! and they were like i watch NBC all the time and and have never seen a comercial for it.
I’m shocked! I love the show and I’m so sad to see it go. It was the one show I HAD to watch and I looked forward to it. At least Deadliest Catch is back for a while! :o)
T.V. Show Trauma is the closest show to being the real life of Emergency Personel. We both are in the Emergency Personel feild. This show should stay on t.v.!!!! Trauma is one of the best shows that has been on t.v. in a long time. One E.M.T and another Military Medic, WE THINK THE SHOW SHOULD STAY ON AIR!!!!!!!!!!
I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT TRAUMA IS GOING OFF. I AM GETTING READY TO START EMT SCHOOL AND IT WAS EXCITING FOR ME TO WATCH IT. I THINK NBC NEEDS TO BRING IT BACK ON THE AIR OR LET SOMEBODY ELSE PICK IT UP. ITS A DISGRACE THAT THESE PEOPLE WILL NOT LEAVE THE GOOD SHOWS ON!!!!
Thats cool about the school and i agree with you.
My fiancé and I watched Trauma together and the show was what made us come home to a refreshing new atmosphere at home! So much of the drama and comedy made us relax after a hard days work. After watching Trauma, we were humbled by our little stressed jobs. Well, at least Trauma showed us to be thankful for our less dangerous positions….. The things the Trauma crew have to deal with are much like life, except their decisions can cost somebody’s life. We would really like for our Trauma show to make a 2nd series! We consider Trauma a… Read more »
DON’T Cancel this show, I don’t watch much TV but I am addicted to this show. This show seems so real and the character are real. They would be so stupid to cancel this great show.
A real story and it has to be cancelled. I guess it is not gruesome, violent or athletic enough. All good shows get cancelled. Others run forever with prefictable plots and endings.
Get it together. Trauma is a great show. Keep it.
I just want to say how much I enjoyed the show. The cast was enjoyable to watch.
