The aliens came and, despite some ratings challenges, they are staying — for at least one more season. ABC has renewed the V TV show for a second season.
Like the original, the new V revolves around the arrival of aliens to the planet Earth. While the visitors profess that they’ve come in peace, their ulterior motives slowly become clear. The cast includes Elizabeth Mitchell, Morena Baccarin, Morris Chestnut, Joel Gretsch, Logan Huffman, Lourdes Benedicto, Laura Vandervoort, and Scott Wolf.
The series got off to a strong start in November with a 5.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 14.3 million total viewers. At the time, it was the highest rated debut of the 2009-10 season. Unfortunately, a large percentage of those viewers didn’t return for the second week. Episode two brought in a 3.8 rating and 10.7 million.
Week three dropped yet again, to a 3.1 in the demo and 9.26 million viewers. Thankfully, the ratings decline evened off from there. Unfortunately, due to some backstage issues, ABC put the show on hiatus for several months.

When V returned, the show’s ratings were understandably lower than they had been. Still, the drop could have been far worse than it was — attracting a 2.8 in the demo and 7.03 million viewers. The numbers later slipped to a low of a 1.9 rating and 4.87 million.
But now, in the final weeks of the season, V is starting to show a little growth. Last week’s brought a 2.1 and 5.37 million. This week attracted a 2.3 and 5.69 million. These increases seem to mirror the growth in its lead-in’s viewership (Lost) but they are increases nonetheless.
While it would seem that ABC should realistically cancel V, the network has a tradition of showing some faith in one or two struggling programs each year. It would seem that V is one of those shows. According to executive producer Scott Rosenbaum, ABC has renewed V for a second season of 13 episodes.
Will this gamble pay off? ABC has had mixed results in the past. Samantha Who? didn’t work out while Castle has grown nicely. With an ongoing sci-fi storyline, V isn’t exactly the type of show that’s inviting to new viewers. Perhaps the network has a plan. Time will tell.
What do you think? Are you glad to hear that V has been renewed for season two? Are you surprised? What would you do to boost viewership?

I was a huge Lost fan and after it was over got into “V”! Waiting to find out when it’s coming back on. Thought it was really good and different from the other same old shows that are always on!
This is one of the most interesting shows on tv,with each episode keeping you wanting more.We hardly ever know when the show is coming on.We ended up downloading the entire season. Please do not cancel one of the best shows on tv.Make sure you have a good time slot and this show will do well.If people aren’t watching ,it’s because they don’t know it’s on.
I really like the show, as long as it keeps moving along and “cater” a bit more to the sci-fi audience with ships, special effects, “out-there” ideas, etc. Anna rules! She is very cool.
I’m a bit surprised it was at risk of getting canceled – I’m def happy it will be coming back. A bit impatient holding out until 2011!
AMAZING, incredible, unsurpasssed in science-fiction writing along with first-rate acting. It is obvious that Kenneth Johnson is still writing every episode- I can hardly wait until each new episode appears. Anna’s character is stunning, surprising and her dark enigmatic eyes keeps the viewer guessing. Her costume, makeup and character development is flawless and absolutely one of the main attractions of the show. I hope the ABC listens to its viewers, not a few petty, bloggers who have already denounced V from the beginning. V has had a following since its inception in 1984 and still today has attracted a second… Read more »

It’s about time they said something about this show. I was wondering if it was returning for another season. They really left me hanging in the finale. I hope the beginning of season two is going to be a doooooooosy!!!!! Does anyone know when season two is going to start?
THEY NEED TO BRING BACK FLASHFORWARD ALSO IT WAS GREEAAATTT!!!! AND I LOVE V IF THEY TAKE THIS OFF TO I’M SO DONE WITH ABC! ALL OF THIS NETWORKS KEEP TAKING OFF ALL THE GOOD SHOWS WITHOUT GIVING THEM A CHANCE. FIRST OF ALL MOST OF US ARE WORKING TWO JOBS BECAUSE OF THE ECONOMY AND CANT WATCH THE SHOWS WHEN THEY FIRST HIT THE AIRWAYS SO JUST GIVE IT A FULL SEASON BEFORE PULLING IT AND REMEMBER ADVERTISE A LITTLE BETTER, AND GET MY FLASHFORWARD BACK
V does not appeals to me initially, but when I started watching it, the storyline does grasp me. The special effects was average, but the acting and story is a plus. Definitely looking forward to season 2.
I am so glad to see V return for season 2. My family and I were totally into it. I hope season 2 makes for a great return and ABC will renew for a 3rd season. Awesomw show love it!!!
Great show! Great acting! Great Story! Wold like more communication from the ABC network as to what is going on!? When is it going to continue?
I believe that the show is just suffering from the erratic airing. It started off then went off for a few months, then came back. You tend to lose viewers that way except for the die hard fans.
love it!!!
I enjoy watching “V” because the show is definitely a break from all the on going reality/crime dramas flooding the T.V. market. ABC just needs to capture the viewers that they did with the “LOST” series by finding the perfect time slot for “V”.
I love “V” because it is a break from all the reality & crime dramas shows that seem to dominate the networks. ABC needs to find the viewers that they captured w/ the “LOST” series…. find a good time slot for ‘V” and the show will exceed expectations.
They were smart to summarize what had happened during the pilot when they went into the episodes. That needs to happen again during Season 2 to bring all those who haven’t been watching up to date on things. As for me, I think the special effects were excellent and the story line quite interesting. The actors are doing a great job. I liked it soooo much that I had to go online to find out if they were going to continue with another season…and I’m sooooo glad they are. Can’t wait to see where this story goes. Hopefully, the 5th… Read more »
