The world of network television can be a confusing and scary place, not unlike Wayward Pines. TV shows can disappear without any explanation. A show can be touted as a big success and then, the next week, it’s gone. So, how’s Wayward Pines been doing? Will it survive to see a second season? Should it stick around? Cancel or keep it?
On Wayward Pines, Secret Service Agent Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) drives to the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, in search of two missing federal agents. One was a former partner and they once had an affair. A truck slams into his car, he wakes up in the local hospital, and things start to get really strange. The cast of this thriller series also includes Terrence Howard, Melissa Leo, Carla Gugino, Toby Jones, Shannyn Sossamon, Charlie Tahan, Reed Diamond, Juliette Lewis, and Tim Griffin.
The series premiered in mid-May to a 1.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.76 million viewers. It wasn’t an impressive start for a new scripted series but FOX had made the pilot available online for a week at the end of April.
That may have been one of the reasons that the ratings grew in week two — by more than 20%. Episode two garnered a 1.2 in the demo with 4.589 million viewers. The numbers have fluctuated a little since then but they’ve essentially held steady. Thus far, the season’s averaged a 1.15 in the demo with 4.04 million.
While the ratings certainly aren’t very impressive, Wayward Pine’s relatively small audience seems to be pretty devoted and consistently watches. What’s more, FOX has been having a hard time establishing scripted series and this is their only dramatic offering thus far this summer.
While the numbers could certainly be a whole lot better, I suspect that FOX will renew Wayward Pines for another run for next summer.
But, what do you think? Do you like the Wayward Pines series? Would you watch a second season? Cancel or keep it?
I like the actors but, the narrative is screwy. I think it makes superman reasonably disguised. It has grabbed me but the 2000 yr leap is too much. I thought it was going to be a rebellious series and it is too sci fi it is pass star trek. The science guy and his allies ah they had me but if they keep the 2000 yr old story i won’t watch it if it stays on. Thats too bad because it has promise.
Don’t like it at all. Never even finished the first episode. Too weird. And annoying characters. Fox should have kept Gang Related or Gracepoint. Those were great shows.
I stuck w/it. I’ve seen better but have also seen much worse. I say renew it. But I do agree w/garner. I don’t think Gang Related should have been cancelled…. now THAT was a really good show. Most of the shows that are interesting viewing for ADULTS
I didn’t get to finish my sentence! Most of the shows that are interesting viewing for ADULTS are not renewed but are replaced by total mindless junk! Ok, I’m finished now. : )
Garner, I thought the same after watching the first couple episodes. The first intrigued me enough to watch the second but, it just got weirder after that. Curiosity got the best of me, so I forged ahead. In later episodes, the weirdness is explained in a way. I always watch online as there aren’t as many commercial breaks. As far as the characters being annoying, that didn’t bother me other than the nurse being a total creep, but the reason why Wayward Pines is the way it is explains the way the characters are.
I really like this series. Each week there seems to be something new. The show evolves positively every week. Sure hope it’s renewed.
I love this series!!! Please DO NOT cancel. I look forward each week in suspense as to what will happen next. I love the mystery and cast!!
I really like Wayward Pines, and Hope Fox doesn’t cancel it. I have a hard time trusting Fox, and being willing to watch their series, as they are just too fast to cancel. That breeds distrust in viewers, who might like something, but have to worry that Fox will, yet again, jump the gun. I prefer to watch work that is not ruled by such a fickle administration. But I did become intrigued with Wayward Pines, and hope that I am not once again proven right in my assessment that Fox does not deserve my loyalty.
i like the show but i will like it to be a miniseries not a series, some storylines are better short and sweet.look at under the dome that was supposed to be a miniseries and now its unbearable to watch, and look at fargo in fx 10 episodes and it was amazing ..if they do more seasons they might ruin the substance of the show
I agree I miniseries would be much better rather than her series. I don’t see how they can hold this together for more than a miniseries
Every show needs time to grow and this one deserves it.
I will keep watching and hoping that Netflix or another streaming service picks it up if need be.
Wayward Pines is a little surreal, but who doesn’t like surreal. It has more twists than a pretzel. I hope that the ratings hold up…. Bill
I hope this show continues
Please do not cancel this sow. It is another good show that is different and has a good cast. You must renew it.
This show is a good one. Yes, renew it for second season.
I like this show and hope it gets another shot.
Stupid question! This is a badass show. Love it. I can’t wait for the next episode each week. The waiting sucks. Renew this show.
Hmmmm! I thought it was already renewed. I haven’t seen it in a couple weeks so I’m not sure where the story is at. If they cancel after one season I’m not sure how they can tie things up from the three books. Going from book on to book three in one season would be like only reading every other chapter and then the finish. After reading the books I really think this would have done much better on a pay channel where they could keep closer to the books. As is though. I thought it was pretty good. Good… Read more »
Wayward Pines is EXCELLENT !! I sincerely hope it is renewed. VERY intriguing. I can’t wait for the next episode every week. GREAT story – GREAT cast !!
