No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency: TV Show Cancelled But May Return as Movies

No. 1 Ladies' Detective AgencyAt the TCA press tour, Michael Lombardo, HBO’s president of programming, spoke about the future of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Though it won’t be continuing as a TV series, there are plans to continue the story in the form of two movies.

No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency ran for seven episodes on HBO, from March until May in 2009. The comedy-drama was filmed on location in Botswana and follows Mma Ramotswe as she operates a detective agency. The cast includes Jill Scott, Anika Noni Rose, Lucian Msamati, and Desmond Dube.

This weekend, Lombardo said, “We’re talking to our friends at the Weinstein Company about the possibility of, and actually developing two scripts, possibly to do two movies. And if we can get the cast together and if everything can come together we’ve love to do it. So it’s alive.”

If they get the final go-ahead, the two HBO movies would likely be shot back-to-back. It seems they won’t be filmed completely in Botswana however.

It was reported last month that the show’s producers had relocated from Botswana to Cape Town. The Botswana government, hard hit by the recession, balked at the idea of subsidizing film production while South Africa doubled their rebate offer.

If the movies are actually made, they’ll be filmed mostly in Cape Town with occasional lensing in Botswana, the locale where the story is set.

What do you think? Are you a fan of No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency? Would you like to see it return as a pair of movies?

The books are simplistic and so is the show. That is the beauty of it. It would be good for a change that a network continued to air a show that is respectful, fun, and did not just feed us, action, sex, violence and wallstreet. Bring back the Number 1 ladies detective agency. I love the books and the show is a credit to them.

Well written, a joy to watch and listen to, intelligent, and a balance between worrying what will happen next to laughing out loud. It’s a shame that something so enjoyable had such a short run. I know there were more books in the series to keep us #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency viewers happy. My family and I just watched the last one and knew what was coming but not the direction it would take. Every actor and actress was great for the part!

I have just discovered this series and I am so disappointed that the show was cancelled. It is one of the best series ever. You really left us hanging – it was clearly designed for more – the story lines are incomplete. I would like the movies but even that wouldn’t be as good as a continuation of the series.

I love it, such a change from the awful american violent series. I would love to see the last books as a series. what is wrong with the BBC. Anything good and they stop and continue with the blood thirsty ones

I discover the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency was on dvd after I finished reading the series. After watching the 1st season I started looking for the 2nd season only to find out there was not one.I started searching to find out if one was planned.I found out the plan was for 2 movies. As of this date it looks like nothing is happened.I feel that we as an audience have been robbed!I like so many people I am sure have fallen in love with the series.I think you should do the movies or better yet reinstate the series.I feel this would rate up there with As Time Goes By.Just give people a chance to discover this series. Some of our best series were slow starters. This series was not given a chance.

I absolutely loved the first season, I cannot understand why a show with such a strong following is not guaranteed many hit seasons to come! Explain this to me please!!! I would love to see as many episodes as can be produced!!!! Still waiting……The Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency was one of HBO’s better presentations!!!!!!!!!!

I just discovered the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency and am so disappointed that there won’t be further series. For sure, movies should be made, but a Season 2, 3, & 4 would be even better. So wholesome, gentle, kind … and so appreciative of African culture– unlike the usual press.
