It was revealed yesterday that ABC had decided not to order any additional episodes of 666 Park Avenue. The show may not be technically cancelled but all acknowledge that it won’t be back. Thankfully all 13 episodes that have been produced are expected to air.
Before the show even premiered, One Million Moms (a site started by the conservative American Family Association) urged their readers to write to ABC to “strongly encourage” the network to cancel their plans to air the program. “Let them also know you are prepared to join thousands of other voices in urging advertisers to place it on their ‘do not advertise’ list and consider pulling all ads from the ABC network in protest.”
A later post lists some of 666 Park Avenue’s sponsors and encourages readers to email them in protest directly; Johnson & Johnson, Egg Beaters (ConAgra Foods), KFC (YUM Brands), Subway, Revlon, Colgate Total (Colgate-Palmolive), and Macy’s in protest of their commercial support.
Wednesday’s post claims victory, stating that none of the sponsors of the first episodes were seen advertising on later installments. The post urges readers to email their distaste for the program to other sponsors; Petco, Clorox, Outback, Dyson, Dairy Queen, and Red Lobster (Darden Restaurants).
While it was most likely just poor ratings that sank 666 Park Avenue, do you think that the protests to the network and their sponsors influenced ABC’s decision? Share your thoughts below.
I agree with Samara and all the others who think that 666 is no worse than other shows in it’s time slot shown on ABC and the other networks every other day of the week. And when compared to some of the shows on cable channels like FX, it’s quite tame. Other shows in earlier time slots are much more violent when it comes to the supernatural. Grimm and Supernatural are two such shows and we love both of those. As the other have said, you don’t have to watch if you don’t like the show and their precious kids… Read more »
I don’t understand what about this show that the Million Moms group didn’t like? I never watched it yet myself but if this group didn’t like it, they shouldn’t watch it.
Was the show murdering moms by the boatload? Why did it get targeted?
It wasn’t about murdering mom’s but if it was they missed one million. The show was a Twilight Zone-ish show.
Christians are the worst kind of evil. Their belief system is you either convert or die. True native american’s know this to be true.
Many might not know this, but ABC is being boycotted by millions of soap fans since September of 2011, and they are tuning out ABC except GH….that is the real reason of the cancellations of both 666 Park Avenue and Last Resort, ABC will not make a statement what caused the cancellations…. ABC will lie, they have and they will continue to do so…. These shows are low rated because of the boycott, that is the truth…please join our boycott to bring ABC down, it is what they well deserve for wrongful cancellations towards our favorite shows.
“666” was a crap show, thats all. Could have done much better with a darkier storyline.
“million moms” should stop trying to blame media for their failings as parents
i have always siad if someone didn’t want to watch a show turn it off or turn the channel. this show isn’t on during a time slot that children should be up an watching. it isn’t showing even a 4th of what the games the kids play have. it was a show i really started to like and now someone who is forcing the network to take it off–you made the choice for me–well i would like to make my own choice and if you don’t like a show turn it off–turn the channel don’t make my choices cause i… Read more »
It all seems like a cruel joke! Somebody PLEASE explain to me what was so different about “666” that the conservative !@#$%^”s felt they needed to even bother messing with it! This show has had no nudity, no strong language, little sexual content, and absolutely no reference to the devil – or to religion at all, for that matter! It even had very little violence when compared to the majority of other shows still airing! It was subtle, it hinted at an evil, supernatural force, and had ghosts! That pales in comparison to shows like “Criminal Minds”, “CSI”, and “Bones”,… Read more »
Totally agree Samara! I was working on a comment, but you have said everything already. Well put. I just wish these “moms” would go away. After all, this isn’t the first time. Don’t they have anything useful to do?
“It’s the ratings stupid” — John Carville, James Carville’s kid brother working as an ABC exec The only effect One Million Moms had, if any, was to increase the number of viewers who had not heard about the show and tuned in to see what the kerfuffle was all about. One Million Moms is only interested in One Million Moms and how much money they can milk from the sheeple that follow them … most of whom weren’t going to watch this show anyways and most of whom would not stop buying products even thou they threatened to do so.… Read more »
WOW you really take these things serious. I was only joking.
I don’t care for the show however the one million moms need to get a life after their children leave the nest.
they should of called it park avenue.
To say the One Million Moms had anything to do with the cancellation is like saying Donald Trump was the reason the president shared his birth certificate. Who knew ! The show was fantastic. As another person noted the name 666 shown on a Sunday night might have been a little off beat, but my goodness people get real. The show was fabulous. Hopefully a cable network will pick it up.
Seriously, I’m tired of these self-righteous bigots ruining the chance for me to even have a decision. Who the hell are they to dictate what’s best for the rest of us? Here’s a clue, million moms, your tv not only turn on, but off as we’ll, I’m sure your tv came with more than 1 channel on it, and you’re raising people who are ill-equipped to deal with the real world cuz they’re all gonna be shocked to learn the streets aren’t lined in gumdrops and tinsel. Worry about your own homes, your own lives and leave the rest of… Read more »
Thank you stupid mothers for ruining this great show, just shut the hell up … there isnt one appealing show to me on abc anymore since lost ended…why must all sci-fi shows end like this … give them a chance!!!!!!!!
ABC needs to stop listening to One Million Moms….seriously???? They need to shut up. If they don’t like it, then don’t watch it. So simple! I know. I don’t see anything wrong about this show. I know what 666 means, ok? But….come on, ppl! 666 Park Avenue is my favorite show on ABC. That’s it. I’m so mad at One Million Moms….they do a lot of stuff to make sure 666 Park Avenue is cancelled….I mean…..like I said, You don’t like it? Then don’t watch it. That is so much easier than doing stuff or writing letters to ABC. This… Read more »
Personally I think all it needed was a name change…I’m sure the name was a turn off for potential viewers. Simply calling it “The Drake” may have been all that was needed to interest viewers turned off by a show with “666” in the title.
I like that name Coffeemarc.
And I agree it’s a good show in need of a name change not a cancelation.
Why doesn’t ABC cancel all those dumb comedy shows that show sex galore. This show was done very well and I found each week that it had some twist and turns that was very interesting. So moms, look at the comedy shows with all the sex on starting at 8 p.m.
Good question lusta. Those are far worse than 666 in my opinion.
