CBS has long had a problem finding the right sitcom to round out their Monday night line-up. Two and a Half Men, How I Met Your Mother, and The Big Bang Theory work well but the network needs a solid fourth player. As this season began, it looked like Accidentally on Purpose just might be the one. No longer. It’s been cancelled.
Accidentally on Purpose revolves around thirty-something Billie Chase (Jenna Elfman) after she breaks up with her boyfriend/boss (Grant Show). She has a one-night fling with a much younger man, Zack (Jon Foster), and becomes pregnant. Billie ultimately decides to keep both the baby and the guy. The series also features Lennon Parham, Nicolas Wright, Ashley Jensen, and Pooch Hall.
The TV show got off to a pretty good start with a 3.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.91 million viewers. On Monday nights, the first 15 episodes ended up averaging a 3.1 in the demo and 8.23 million viewers. That’s actually quite good but the network has very high expectations because the TV show is surrounded by their very popular comedies. The real test is to see how well the series will perform on another night.
After a hiatus, CBS brought Accidentally on Purpose to Wednesday nights. With The New Adventures of Old Christine as a lead-in, the ratings fell like a rock. The three original episodes averaged a 1.8 in the key demo and 5.72 million viewers. If there was any hope for the series, these numbers dashed them.
CBS has now confirmed that the sitcom has been cancelled and will not be returning for season two. CBS can afford to be picky in what sitcoms it keeps and has also cancelled Gary Unmarried after two seasons and Old Christine after five.
Fortunately, the network aired all 18 episodes of Accidentally on Purpose and viewers got to see Billie give birth. Unfortunately, they won’t get to see how she and Zack cope as new parents.

Hi im 13 and im from scotland the onley reason i watch tv is couse of american sictoms such as aop and himym 2 and half men i watch it on the computer so i dont have to wait to watch it here in great britain also all you care about is money cbs you pricks im so angry **** YOU CB ****ING S IHATE U …….

Was sitting here on a night when there are all reruns wondering what happened to AOP…and upon googling it saw it is cancelled… sooooo sad! it was a great show… there was not an episode that did not make me laugh… and I can’t even begin to say which character I loved more… I will keep my fingers crossed that like many shows before it will be brought back!
I just found out Accidentally on Purpose wasn’t getting a follow up season and I am BULL S%@$!!!!!!!! I don’t understand why? Does anyone know if these forums are read by the; (as someone previously coined the aptly phrase) “head honchos” @ CBS? This show was GREAT, better than most comedy’s I’ve seen, and oh SORRY CBS you move the night, don’t advertise it then when ratings go down to 5 MIL that’s not enough for you all to be able to vacation in the Hampton’s. I live in the UK and googled Accidently On Purpose to see what was gonna happen in it cause I was bored and I found out that it’s not gonna go past season one. We’re only about halfway through season one and I wanted to see what I could expect and now I find out that a perfectly good show was cancelled because CBS changed the timeslot and absurdly expected the same ratings. Probably the best new show I’ve seen in the last year and a shame it didn’t get a real chance.
I am so bummed about this! I googled this because I was certain it would be back once Mrs. Elfman had some time off with her new baby. I don’t understand why a show as stupid as How I Met Your Mother could possibly overtake such a funny and wonderful show. Big mistake moving it. I didn’t know it moved to Wednesdays but thankfully my DVR knew where to find it so I could watch the remaining episodes.
Curse you CBS! No wonder you guys fall behind NBC and ABC!
Dear Head Hanchos @ every nertwork You obviously need to have better test audiences or something or maybe you need to be replaced yourselves! This is absolutally rediculous how can you possibly not see that people are liking these shows that you keep taking off the air!!!! Even here in Belgium a lot of people watch the show…it’s one of the better shows I’ve seen in a long time and I am sure that I am not alone!

I totallu agree, i live in the Netherlands, and me an my friends loved the show. I think they really really should reconsider, i miss the show, and i really would like to see more of it.

I just can’t belive they cancelled this awesome show. When I see that such shows as Old Christine got 5 seasons, it just makes me sick, seriously I really had to be bored as hell and with nothing else to see and even then i’d most probably not watch it. REALY disapointed that Accidentally on Purpose didn’t get a second season, worst choice CBS ever made. AOP was a really good show. It was well written and the characters were likeable. Too bad the ratings weren’t enough to keep it.

I think the biggest problem is they changed the night, people have scheduals that they are not going to change to watch a show , no matter how good it is, For example, mondays nights ,for me, are almost always free, but on Thursday nights i have prior comentments. And after watching a show on a certain night for so long its hard to rember to watch it if it comes on three days later.
