Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was a staple on Sunday nights on ABC for nearly a decade. The show’s ratings faded over the years and the network decided it was time to end the show. NBC recently unveiled their own home renovation program, American Dream Builders. Is this series a hit or will it be cancelled after one season instead?
On American Dream Builders, two teams of designers and builders from around the country must work together to perform major renovations on a pair of homes. Their work is judged and designers/builders are eliminated from the competition. The judges are Nate Berkus, Eddie George, and Monica Pedersen.
The show debuted on March 23rd to a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 3.6 million total viewers. This was a poor showing right out of the gate and the numbers got worse and worse for the next two episodes.
In early April, NBC aired the fourth episode on a Monday night, following their most-successful show The Voice. The episode drew a 1.5 rating with 5.1 million viewers. While those numbers were a big improvement, they were still pretty poor.
Most who tuned in for that special episode apparently didn’t feel particularly inclined to tune in for the next regular Sunday night episode because the ratings dropped lower. The numbers for subsequent installments were even worse. It’s currently the lowest-rated show on the network.
NBC has moved American Dream Builders to the 7pm timeslot and the network seems to be just burning off the remaining episodes at this point. They will pre-empt this week’s episode with an expanded edition of Dateline.
With such poor ratings, there’s no way that they’ll be renewing it for a second season. On the positive side, it seems likely that they will still air the three remaining episodes and bring this competition series to a close.
But, what do you think? Do you think American Dream Builders should be cancelled or renewed for a second season?
American Dream Builders is the best new decorating show I have seen in s LONG time. I really respect Nate Burkus and his expertise. I hope there is a day a time this show can continue.
Fantastic show…advertise it more…it was a well kept secret, that was the problem. Very entertaining, looked forward to each episode. We watched it on demand, and back to back as we didn’t know it even existed. Do not cancel, advertise!!!
RENEW RENEW RENEW DEFINITELY RENEW
This is the only show that doesn’t emphasize how to do things cheaply but shows true quality finishes and design.
Please renew!!!
keep it
My daughters and I love this show. I caught it on NBC at 8pm, then missed it when they changed to 7pm. Now my daughters watch it on Hulu. PLEASE don’t cancel, I don’t think people knew about it
ok
Love love love this show.
I liked the show but there should’ve been a longer timeline for the renovations. Since the show wasn’t aired live you could’ve given them longer than 5 days for each transformation.
If you did then the team leader could’ve had more time to ensure the flow of the home. Plus I wanted Jay to win since he showed growth during this show & Lukas remained the same. Maybe next season there could be changes made in the judging.
I loved this show. I hope for second season. Maybe during the week? Pl don’t cancel it.
I really look forward to this show & hope it stays on the air. I love seeing the renovations & enjoy Nate Berkus.
I loved the show but in beginning I forgot it was on. Then it seemed to disappear so I thought it was cancelled. But then it came back for finale at a different time. Wish it wasn’t cancelled.
It was such a joy to be able to watch a decorating show that wasn’t on HGTV for a change! I loved the concept of ADB and it was so uplifting to see a builder who never really decorated and a designer with no formal training end up as the 2 finalists….the American Dream is still alive and well! I hope NBC – or whatever station might pick up the show – will market it more broadly and enthusiastically and try it again for another season.
PEASE, do not cancel this wonderful show. Most ladies live their lives buying home & garden magazines, decor magazines and everything else that has to do with style. WE did not know this show was on because it is NOT a HGTV show, must have had little or no marketing. Give it a chance. Nate is a favorite in the decorating world and the designers are awesome too. Please DO NOT cancel this show. Thank you.
I love this show. I was so glad that it was on at 6 last week so it did not compete with PBS shows on a Sunday night. They should always do that, then people will watch it. I think Nate is the best.
I wonder if the networks realize that more and more people are watching these shows on Hulu or other internet sites. We are a busy society that can’t always be sitting in front of the tv at a certain time and certain date just because they decided to air it on that day. Does that mean that we don’t still make the effort to watch the shows when it benefits our schedule.. I love this show. Please don’t cancel!
I think that this show is great. The only good reality type shows are home improvement shows. Please don’t cancel. Just needed to see Nate more.
