It’s pretty rare that a TV show that’s launched very late in the season becomes a success in the ratings. Could American Odyssey on NBC be an exception? Will it be cancelled or renewed for a second season instead?
On the American Odyssey TV show, an international cover-up explodes when the lives of a female Special Forces soldier, a disillusioned corporate lawyer, and a political activist from a privileged family unexpectedly collide. The cast includes Anna Friel, Peter Facinelli, Jake Robinson, Jim True-Frost, Sadie Sink, Omar Ghazaoui, Nate Mooney, Elena Kampouris, Daniella Pineda, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Treat Williams.
The series debuted on April 4th to a 1.14 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 5.37 million total viewers. That was a very poor premiere but the ratings got much worse in week two, dropping more than 24%, to a 0.81 rating in the demo and 4.05 million.
The ratings for American Odyssey then plunged again in week three, falling to a 0.52 rating with 3.11 million. Last week’s episode held pretty steady in the demo but dropped another 10% in viewership.
Unless the numbers take a stunning change of course quickly, there’s little question that NBC will cancel this TV show. The ratings are just too terrible to justify a second season.
At this point, the real question is if the network will pull American Odyssey from the schedule before all of the remaining eight episodes have aired. They could go either way.
NBC cancelled and pulled low-rated Allegiance from the Thursday night schedule after five episodes but released the eight unaired installments online. Conversely, they let the remaining episodes of The Slap mini-series air. We’ll have to wait and see what they do.
But, what do you think? Do you like the American Odyssey TV show? Why is it performing so poorly? If you ran the network, would you cancel or renew this series for a second season?
i just watched episode 5 and I can’t find 1,2,3&4 Where has this show been hiding??? Great show NBC you need to do a better job of promoting her!!
Come on hit Kelly & Michael, The Talk, the daily show… Get out there and tell the world about this show!!!
Please don’t cancel this program. It is riveting and well acted.I can’t figure out why the ratings are so low
I would must definitely want a second and perhaps a third season. I think this show gives the audience something different, although conspiratorial, but not without merit. I see the possibility of something close to the plot happening in real life.
Please Continue, and renew this show
Before the first episode aired, the previews seemed pretty interesting, but I didn’t feel compelled to watch it. I DID watch the first episode and WOW! It blew me away and I was hooked. What a great show this is! The story seems so real and the acting is wonderful. I really hope the series continues.
Please renew!
Its unfortunate that shows like this get zero promotion yet are expected to somehow perform viewership miracles to be renewed. This is a decent solid show that seems more like a Showtime series than an NBC series. Far superior to that joke Katherine Heigl nonsense. I hope Netflix picks it up but I doubt it. All I know is this show deserved a chance and should have had proper promotion and a proper season start date. Not mid season BS that it got.
This is one of the few TV shows I even watch and I set my weekly schedule around it. Everything about it is riveting. At every turn there’s something new. Like in real life, we’re seeing our government and business leaders in a light where we don’t know if any of them can be trusted. we’re even seeing “terrorists” that are more honorable than “the good guys”.
I can see it all now–cancel another decent show and ring on another “reality” show. What a waste.
Hoping this is not cancelled before remaining taped programs shown.
Excellent show!!! I’ve ben watching and love it. It’s very real in content!!
I love this show. Hopefully you will renew it. I have seen a great drama like this since west wing.
The presentation keeps me going. NBC should let it run its course. On the other hand, the network could borrow Ed Schulz from MSNBC between his sessions of anger management to offer a talk show about how much everyone should appreciate the current White House crew. What would there be not to like about that?
TB
Hollywoodized but plausible given recent foreign policy and the impact of Haliburton in Iraq or have we forgotten it already? A good reminder with lots of twists and turns – enough to hold our attention. So yes, continue to show all the remaining 8 episodes and then made a decision whether to renew or not.
Pleeeeeeeeease don’t cancel this show it’s soooo good and it keeps you on edge it keeps you in suspense every week. I honestly feel like maybe the didn’t promote it enough alot of people don’t know about it but it is a great show don’t cancel sometimes thing don’t take off at first but eventually it will jus give it a chance let the season finish and see what happens
Renew, please!
This program is riveting. Can’t imagine why NBC would not at least show the remaining
taped programs. I imagine the subject of deliberately killing our own troops is unsettling
to some viewers, but the intrigue keeps me coming back for more. I hope the show will
be continued.
