There won’t be any more Ascension, at least on Syfy. The cable channel has told Deadline that, “We were very happy with Ascension as an event series, but with so much high profile development in the works, we have decided not to pursue a full series.”
Airing in December 2014, Ascension follows an alternate reality in which, in 1963, President Kennedy and the government sent 600 volunteers (men, women, and children) into space on a century-long voyage aboard a self-sustaining generation ship. The cast includes Tricia Helfer, Gil Bellows, Brian Van Holt, Andrea Roth, Brandon P. Bell, Jacqueline Byers, Tiffany Lonsdale, and P.J. Boudousqué.
When Syfy ordered the six hour episodes of Ascension last year, the plan was to make it a regular series if the mini-series was successful enough — ala Battlestar Galactica. The ratings were okay but certainly nothing to write home about.
It’s unclear if the producers will try to find a home for Ascension elsewhere.
What do you think? Did you like the Ascension series? Would you have watched it as a regular weekly TV show?
I Love the series! It’s exciting! To think they where in space on an epic interstellar journey then to just find out they never left earth! I’m left in suspense. I want to know more about crista and what part loralai plays. What happens to the officer now on an empty planet
It’s a great premise and lots of potential, but the characters are all too “Daytime Soap Opera” – shallow, pretty and well, unbelievable. With the exception of Stokes who was the only real gritty character. I would give it a three, four is certainly attainable, but the directors have to put some meat on the characters and not make it so damned sterile.
This show was awesome. Stumbled across it on netflix as well and just finished the last episode. WANT MORE.
I really enjoyed the series and desperately hope it is picked up by another network. It would fit well on the Space network.
Wish they would see these awesome stories such as Ascension to the end! Its never cool to end a good story line with such a cliffhanger and cancel a return of the series! :(. Bring Ascension back!!! Finish it out! Bring it to an end!
Really liked it and would like to see it in full.
This could be an epic show. It has a lot of potential, all it needs is great writers and a new, worthier host/channel. It would be a great waste to see nothing come of this show after the first season.
Great mini-series. Very disappointed in SyFy for not following through with the series.
While I found the mini-series compelling at times, the issue has been, as with all other SyFy series, a severe problem with character depth. I see, as yet, another series with carbon-copy cut-out characters that I can’t get any emotional attachment to. Usually, it isn’t the actors, actresses and their performances, it is the screen writing that produces over-flawed characters that could not have survived overnight at a Boy Scout camping trip, much less a 51 years in a “spaceship.” Great premise in idea, poor in execution. Its a shame because I’m a fan of ambitious fantasy/science fiction projects, but… Read more »
I liked Ascension a lot…sad to see it die so soon
I would love to see how this whole thing plays out. I’m sure I can’t be alone. The series was just getting good. It kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see more. Please find a home for this series.
I’ve been a syfy watcher for about fifty years. Ascention had potential. Characters were being developed, plots were thickening, interest was peeking . Especially the concept of the story. I was blown away by the idea of the whole thing being an experiment. So on Netflix when I positioned myself on the couch, cheddar rice cakes ready, cold drink poised, I saw that after episode six, there was nothing. Very disappointing. You had a winner here. Who makes these decisions ? It’s like a cruel tease. Well I’d like to thank the writers and directors and producers and actors for… Read more »
Loved the series. I’m gonna need more episodes
OK… I see what’s happening . I put email and twitter addresses in my comments, for people to communicate directly with SYfY and NETFLIX and they get REMOVED! So, again A way to get programmers attention is to comment directly to SYFY and NETFLIX . On Netflix just go to their website and go to HELP and you can Phone or Chat-line . And Look up SyFy twitter ALSO email NBCu ( Owns SYfy) .
So it took NETFLIX to get ASCENCION to the people. That’s how I ended up watching it . Good show.
Some of you think you’re talking to SyFY or NETFLIX when you leave comments but TV SERIES Finale is it’s own web-site . Here are some places to express your opinions that might make SyFy and NETFLIX take notice. There’s strength in numbers.
