File this under: It’s a Different World. According to a Deadline exclusive, ABC is looking at developing a Black-ish TV show spin-off. It would be introduced as a backdoor pilot during a spring episode of the sitcom. Black-ish stars Anthony Anderson, Tracee Ellis Ross, Yara Shahidi, Marcus Scribner, Miles Brown, and Marsai Martin.
The new series would feature Shahidi’s Zoey Johnson at college. The concept harkens back to A Different World, which followed Denise Huxtable, played by Cosby Show breakout Lisa Bonet. Black-ish creator Kenya Barris would create the new comedy with former Black-ish showrunner Larry Wilmore.
ABC Plans Black-ish TV Show Spin-off Starring Yara Shahidi
According to the report, talks at ABC are only in the early stages. It seems Wilmore left his position on Black-ish to make The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, but then Comedy Central cancelled the Colbert Report replacement back in August of 2016.
A few months later, in November, Wilmore signed an overall deal with ABC Studios. According to the news outlet, the studio decided to combine his original idea for a college comedy with their already brewing plans for a Black-ish spin-off.
What do you think? Are you a Yara Shahidi fan? How do you like the idea of a Black-ish TV show spin-off. Sound off, in the comments.
