After some speculation, it has been confirmed that the original Blade TV series (based on the Marvel comic series and hit trilogy of movies starring Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristofferson) has indeed been cancelled, unfortunately leaving fans with a cliffhanger.
A representative for Spike TV confirmed that the Kirk ‘Sticky Fingaz’ Jones action series has indeed been cancelled and won’t be renewed for a second season. The network is said to have been very happy with the cast and overall production but that the audience and ratings just were not as large as they’d hoped. The show started off with 2.5 million viewers but, by the September 13, 2006 finale, viewership had dropped to less than a million. End of story? Maybe not.
Though there weren’t enough fans for Spike TV’s liking, New Line (who produced the show) still believes in the show and reportedly would like to see it continue. Actor Neil Jackson (better known as Marcus Van Sciver on Blade) has said that New Line is currently looking for a new home for the series.
The 12-episode series has yet to be shown overseas or to be produced on DVD. Both are currently in the works and Neil thinks that, if the series does well in these areas, it could help bring about a second season. TV fans will remember that phenomenal DVD sales brought about the return of the Family Guy animated series and inspired the short-lived Joss Whedon Firefly series to return as a film.
Will the half human/half immortal vampire slayer and his allies return to the small screen? Time will tell. I’ll keep you posted on new developments so, stay tuned!
I can’t believe they cancelled it. It was the best show on TV.
I AM A BIG FAN OF BLADE T.V. SERIES,CAN’T WAIT UNTIL THE NEXT SEASON. LET’S GET THE SHOW ON THE ROAD.
Count me as another who loved the show and was quite pissed when it wasn’t picked up for a second season. I’m the demographic they’re looking for, and I haven’t watched spike tv since. ********!
I thought that Blade:the series was a great show. I am so tired of networks making great shows and just because “ratings weren’t that great” they get rid of it. Why don’t they put it on to midnights? Get rid of all of that programming crap? I mean come on there have been a lot of great shows. I am sure that a lot of people would remember Wonderfalls, Alias, Blue Collar tv, Charmed, Fear Factor, Invasion, Malcom in the Middle, That 70s show just to name a few! Once again I think that there are a lot of companies… Read more »
what is wrong with you people?
You dump a great series Blade and keep crap like monk and pshcy???
Please put it on DVD so I can put it next to my other vampire collection movies…
peace out..
I don’t think Spike TV is seen worldwide but I could be wrong. Maybe Sci-Fi Channel or USA Network. Hey, it worked for Highlander: The Series. Also the complete set for “Over There” is now on DVD also. Here’s hoping to see Blade vs. Moon Knight!
They need to be picked up by a station who won’t cut any of the good stuff out. Like HBO or Showcase.
What a mistake!
What are the suits at SPIKE thinking?
This series is awesome and needs to be picked up
immediately.
I turned people on to this show and all my friends
loved it.
Bring The Day Walker back, dammit!
god damn this was my favorite television show!!!
What a great series ! ….. following on from the popular blade films …
i sincerely hope that they at least make a second series ( if not more !! )
and that they get to air it over here in the uk and produce dvds of the
series …..
Spike TV is foolish. They don’t deserve the series anyway. It needs to be picked up on a decent network, and NOT be overplayed. Besides, it didn’t belong sandwiched between junk like Star Gayk and wrestling garbage. BRING IT BACK
What killed the series? Spike did. They overplayed it. Low viewship? Why bother watching it at its awkward Wed. hour when you can see it again on Sunday? Miss it this week? Well, next week, there will be yet another “marathon” to show the series, in its entirity, from the start. They tried to shove Blade down our throats — and in doing so, they lost viewers. Worse, as Spike/TNT often does, they tried to promote the show as nothing but a skinflick — this is the channel that shows wrestling at any hour and ultimate fighters. The show didn’t… Read more »
Blade is my favorite character out of any character in films and tv shows. He has the moves, he has the style, he has the atittude, he the weapons, he has the power, and he has his sword. My advice is that the reason it didn’t get high ratings was because their weren’t enough ads. I know this because I told my friends about the series and they were shocked. I told them that it just finished it’s first season and they realy wanted to watch it.
I find it hard to believe that cable shows like Blade would ever be dumped like this. With all of the other cookie cutter crap on network tv, it is a shame that shows like this are tossed to the side. The DVD sales (domestic and international) and rentals alone will make up any anticipated loss. I recall reading something on how networks make more on the DVD’s than they ever made on the show itself.
Why is blade cancelled ?
