Just two days after HBO debuted their new series, Boardwalk Empire, the pay-for-view channel has renewed it for a second season. The show gave HBO their largest premiere since Deadwood’s in 2004 so they’re wasting no time in ordering more.
Boardwalk Empire takes place during the Prohibition Era and stars Steve Buscemi as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, Atlantic City’s treasurer and a backroom dealer who can get things done. Others in the cast include Shea Whigham, Michael Stuhlbarg, Frank Crudele, Vincent Piazza, Stephen Graham, Michael Pitt, Michael Shannon, and Kelly Macdonald.
Here’s the official press release from HBO…
HBO Renews Boardwalk Empire for Second Season
September 21, 2010Following resounding critical approval and high viewer numbers for the series’ Sept. 19 debut, HBO has renewed Boardwalk Empire for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, HBO Programming.
“All the ingredients aligned for this one, from Mark Wahlberg and Steve Levinson’s initial pitch, to Martin Scorsese’s enormous contributions as director and executive producer, to the genius of Terry Winter and the expertise of Tim Van Patten, to a stellar cast led by Steve Buscemi,” said Lombardo. “The response from the media and our viewers has been nothing short of amazing.”
From Terence Winter, Emmy(R) Award-winning writer of “The Sopranos” and Academy Award(R)-winning director Martin Scorsese, Boardwalk Empire is set in Atlantic City at the dawn of Prohibition, when the sale of alcohol became illegal throughout the United States.
Among the early critical raves, People called the show “not-to-be-missed,” hailing Steve Buscemi’s “brilliant, brutally funny performance,” while USA Today observed that Boardwalk Empire “looks to be the season’s best new show on any outlet.” The Philadelphia Inquirer said the series “stands at the pinnacle of TV achievement,” with the New York Observer noting, “It’s really, really good.”
The Sept. 19 premiere of Boardwalk Empire averaged 4.8 million viewers during the 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT) airing to score HBO’s largest premiere of any program in over six years (since March 21, 2004 – “Deadwood” with “The Sopranos” as lead-in). With additional plays at 10:15 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., Boardwalk Empire was watched by a combined 7.1 million viewers for the night.
Season one credits: Created by Terence Winter, Boardwalk Empire is executive produced by Terence Winter, Martin Scorsese, Tim Van Patten, Stephen Levinson and Mark Wahlberg; co-executive producers, Gene Kelly and Lawrence Konner; producers (series), Rudd Simmons and Rick Yorn; producer (pilot), David Coatsworth; supervising producers, Howard Korder and Margaret Nagle.
What do you think? Did you like Boardwalk Empire? Will you keep watching or do you think it should have been cancelled?

ITS A GREAT PROGRAM .WITH ACTORS WHO PLAY PARTS OF ORIGINAL GANGSTERS AND DO GREAT JOB.CAPONE AND LUCKY LUICANO ARE MY TWO FAVORITES.ONLY THING ITS MISSING IS MORE MEYER LANSKY HE ONLY HAD SMALL PART IN EARLER SHOW. ITS AN INSTANT HIT THAT MAKES YOU HATE ITS ONLY A HOUR OR SO LONG.
This is good stuff, feels like time travel to that era. Keeps my gears turning, I like shows that make me do that. What will Nucky do next. Its got a soundtrack for those who are 99 years old and above who will surely dig those tunes, that just gives the ambience striving for authenticity when it is now about to be 2011 for the viewers. I can’t shake off the effect when Jimmy shook hands with a lowly driver for a mob boss who also is a WW I vet introducing himslef as Al Capone. Not to mention Lucky… Read more »
The dialog, the sets, the actors. It’s all there. Nothing better on TV since Twin Peaks.
Best show on TV. I think it will be around for a long time!!! Definition of must see tv
I just watched the pilot. Being a big Martin Scorscese fan, I was a little disappointed honestly. Maybe it was just the storyline I don’t knw honestly. But I’m not about to quit watching just becasue I wasn’t thrilled with the pilot.
Absolutely amazing I’ve already watched the first episode three times. Will definitely continue watching and pick up the season when it’s available.
