Syfy has decided to cancel Caprica, the ratings-challenged spin-off of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica (BSG), but the show’s universe isn’t necessarily going away.
In a statement from the cable channel, Mark Stern, EVP of Original Programming, said, “We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series. Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
Caprica will be pulled from the schedule following the November 2nd episode. According to the statement, “The final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”
This news comes on the heels of the channel’s announced plans for another BSG prequel called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. It had previously been described as an online prequel that could possibly serve as a backdoor pilot for a regular series. BSG executive producer David Eick is on board while Ron Moore is not.
Blood & Chrome will have more action and combat sequences, more closely reflecting the reimagined Galactica series. The description reads, “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet — the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.”
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Caprica be cancelled? Are you excited to see another BSG prequel series?

I agree with the others. It’s a sleeper with periods of robot action to keep you from hitting a good deep REM sleep. Too much of Clarice’s lame gay interracial family (don’t you love other’s lack of morality shoved down your throat?) and too little of Zoe’s bot self. It could be a stupid HBO drama for the lack of SciFi involved.
Thanks for nothing writers/producers. Please watch a few hit scifi shows and try again.
The show was interesting in some cases but not going to miss it at all. It is no where near as good as BSG was and just made me miss watching BSG even more when I watched it..
So sad to see it go. The series had many things going for it, such as a between-the-lines commentary on the future that fits current predictions, as well as a tremendous ensemble cast that showed how flawed human beings can be. I like BSG, but the only real heroes are firemen, you know.
Not sorry to see it go. It was a letdown following the great series it spun from. And for once I don’t have a problem with the cast. The whole show was a sleeper with periods to wake me up. There was more talking then anything else on the show. I don’t watch SyFy for the talking. As soon as they left the labs and the science portion of this series, the show crashed. I was not really involved with ANY of the characters. And the fact that none of the virtual world made it into Galactica??? Why not? It… Read more »
It would be nice to see a Firefly remake, but based on the reception of the series and movie, I can’t see it being a megahit. However, I would welcome anything with Summer Glau.
Caprica was not unpopular because it was too cerebral. SyFy fans don’t have a problem with intelligent TV.
The show caprica was good but I can see why fans lose interest. Theres not enough action and they were too focused on these polygamy family and daniel greystone and his battered life. Fans wanted to see a lot more of the spae side of things with cylons killing people, ships dogfighting etc. In some ways I think syfy killed themselves on this franchise by making the BG remake so good. Now that they gave it an ending they can’t keep making spinoffs unless they take place before(prequel) and it’s hard to swallow watching a new show like Blood and… Read more »
I should have known it would be cancelled. Every time I really like a show, it is cancelled.
I wish SYFY would have given Caprica a chance and maybe a different night would have helped the ratings i think. And i dont like the episodes split up either. Since its cancelled they should just finish the rest of the seasons episodes now so we can have some closure.Sorry to see it go.
That’s a shame. Perhaps the problem was it was just too different from BSG. Since I never liked BSG this was fine for me, but it meant a lot of BSG people wouldn’t like it whereas those outside of the BSG universe wouldn’t care about a prequel. But it was a smart, thoughtful show and I’ll miss it.
Noooo!!!!
I guess the show is just to cerebral for most viewers! It could have been done in at a faster pace though.
I wish they didn’t air half a season at a time. Tough to maintain interest when they take months at a time off from the show. Also, they really shouldn’t have focused so much on the Tauron mafia & the stupid polygamy family of Clarice’s, but rather on the Zoe/Cylon creation side. That was what I, personally, wanted to see.
good, one bad series less
I am really sorry that the network did not give the show more time. The story is interesting and needs more time to fill in all the blanks. I did not like the newest Battlestar Galactica. I did like the original show.
I am not sorry to see this one go. It had an interesting first five minutes, but then just didn’t capture my attention after that.
