Syfy has decided to cancel Caprica, the ratings-challenged spin-off of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica (BSG), but the show’s universe isn’t necessarily going away.
In a statement from the cable channel, Mark Stern, EVP of Original Programming, said, “We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series. Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
Caprica will be pulled from the schedule following the November 2nd episode. According to the statement, “The final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”
This news comes on the heels of the channel’s announced plans for another BSG prequel called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. It had previously been described as an online prequel that could possibly serve as a backdoor pilot for a regular series. BSG executive producer David Eick is on board while Ron Moore is not.
Blood & Chrome will have more action and combat sequences, more closely reflecting the reimagined Galactica series. The description reads, “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet — the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.”
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Caprica be cancelled? Are you excited to see another BSG prequel series?

Once again, quality and depth are compromised in the name of short term marketing. Where a 30 year old cartoon was given depth and social signifigance, it’s legacy will be greater than the credit given to it’s audience. Hats off to all involved with the series…shame to those who see nothing but “product” and a short term Nielson. Culture and audience respect has taken another hit.
Canceling Caprica for Wrestling, Hollywood auction and all other lame sub B-class shows; SyFy needs to change to the logo channel.
Well……………the direction your going you be off the air soon
SyFy…………….SUCKS
I got the impression that Zoe was going to become “THE ONE” at some time in the storyline. But they were taking to long to get there I think. Where she, along with her other friends in the virtual world become the original 6. But hey “IF” they do another prequel where it gets closer to the actual war … maybe they can bring Zoe and her virtual crew more into the story where the action is. In the original Battlestar Galactica story as aired … that was the big secret… WHO is number one? Now we know… but do… Read more »
goddamn **** suckers! I loved caprica!
Another one bites the dust, Heroes , flashforward, now Caprica, but yet shows like sactuary, all the reality shows and V are still on… WTF, Who are the people running the networks, are they all on cheap drugs… Caprica has an excellent cast, writing staff and directing, but because its a show where you have to use your brain a little they yank it because stupid people dont watch it….. Bring Back Caprica… Bring BackCaprica ……. Bring Back Caprica….,, Start chanting people…
I am so disappointed to hear about the cancellation of Caprica ! I really love this show and look forward to the next episode every week. This is such a quality show, with so much potential! I hope another Network with brains in their heads will pick up Caprica. This story needs to go on!
this really pisses me off
they keep airing all of this other crap content, then cancel their better shows!
The same happened to the original Star Trek, but the fans brought it back for a third season and we know the phenomenon that STILL goes on. BattleStar Galactica also had to build an audience.
Syfy. I know you need to make money to keep going, but couldn’t you leave ONE quality show that gets to survive because it is so good.
I fukking hate syfy now a days, the shows are targetted to the aveage stupid joe, all of their “high-profile” series have either been cancelled or finished. Caprica was the only still-running show that I followed on syfy and now it’s gone. Stargate turned into some prissy reality show type **** that is not comparable to Atlantis and Sg-1, and sanctuary is superficial, predictable and uninteresting. when Sci-Fi changed their name to syfy it’s like they became stupider or something. I no longer have a reason to watch syfy, I hope you’re happy you’ve lost a viewer and let me… Read more »
I can NOT believe that Caprica is being cancelled. The show is major sic and I and all my friends are totally pieved at SyFy for the direction they are taking their network. They take on Wrestling? Come on, what the Frack man. Wrestling? It’s fake but not syfy at all. You have to listen to your viewers. You have a real chance here. Caprica is a showing us the way it happened, the history of the revolution, the take-over. You know the show Sinfield? It almost didn’t get a chance at season 2 because of the same reason. But… Read more »
I have been so loyal to SyFy for years.. I hate that my fav shows keep getting cancelled!! and the never ending supply of B movies keep popping up.. I can’t even bare to watch the rest of this series if this is the ending.. TV in general is getting so boring.. If you dont’ like reality shows.. there is nothing on..
Boo Hoo.. we lose another great show..
To bad caprica was getting good. same on syfy network for jerking us-the fans around.
And yet, somehow they keep making Sanctuary… 🙁
It seems that the large Caprica fan base has been royally manipulated. I believe that this show was actually canceled last spring, as rumor had it at the time. However, with many remaining completed episodes in the can, it was decided to split them into two parts: one group to be aired in fall 2010 to keep the fans baited and the second group to be aired in 2011 and used to segue said fan base to another boring sulking boy and his dog story. (Dog…car…motorcycle…spaceship…crop-duster…Whatever!) There’s nothing to look forward to there, folks. Best mouse on over to fanfiction… Read more »
I am not watching SyFy channel’s shows again until they are completed and the last season 6 or 9 is over. I did it with Battlestar Galactica and it did not disappoint me as cancelation of Caprica. Boo SyFy!!!
