Syfy has decided to cancel Caprica, the ratings-challenged spin-off of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica (BSG), but the show’s universe isn’t necessarily going away.
In a statement from the cable channel, Mark Stern, EVP of Original Programming, said, “We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series. Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
Caprica will be pulled from the schedule following the November 2nd episode. According to the statement, “The final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”
This news comes on the heels of the channel’s announced plans for another BSG prequel called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. It had previously been described as an online prequel that could possibly serve as a backdoor pilot for a regular series. BSG executive producer David Eick is on board while Ron Moore is not.
Blood & Chrome will have more action and combat sequences, more closely reflecting the reimagined Galactica series. The description reads, “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet — the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.”
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Caprica be cancelled? Are you excited to see another BSG prequel series?

Waiting for Caprica to return. What the frake, are thinking about.? It’s sci-fi. And very good sci-fi. Still waiting
well it was an ok show but it was a little to slow for my tast still i was just starting to get good just when it stars picking up that channel it lol.
SCI-FI CHANNEL JUST CAN’T GET IT TOGETHER!!!! JUST ABOUT EVERY SCI-FI SERIES I HAVE BEEN A DEDICATED WATCHER OF GETS CANCELED!!!! I HAVE REVERTED BACK TO MY PREVIOUS MODE OF NOT WATCHING THE SCI-FI CHANNEL AT ALL!!!!! I THINK IT’S ALL ABOUT COST AND NOT RATINGS. MOST OF THE STARS ARE WELL KNOWN AND ARE PROBABLY PAID VERY WELL; AS WELL THEY SHOULD BE. I HAVE NOTICED PAULA MALCOMSON ON SEVERAL SERIES. GREAT!!!!!! I REMEMBER HER SUPERB ACTING ON DEADWOOD. I WISH FANS HAD SOME INFLUENCE; BUT NOT WITH THE SCI-FI CHANNEL. GOOD LUCK TO ALL THE ACTORS AND I… Read more »
Its a shame that such a good program has ended. I understand about the poor ratings that it recieved justified ending the show; but I believe that the rating system is flawed, or is it that science fiction fans don’t have the same tastes as the general viewing public. Also you must understand that we as viewers of a cable network are paying for the networks to provide us with what we expect for our viewing pleasure. Caprica looked like it would be an excellent seguay to “Blood and Chrome.” My hopes are that the season end wraps it up… Read more »
Caprica was ingenuous and the brightest star in the SyFy universe. SyFy finally got it right then just like the wrestling fiasco, you commit occupational suicide and remove Caprica from the Friday night time slot. You took your best show and threw it in the trash and now expect your guests to consume garbage. Hopefully another vendor will resurrect Caprica.
I’m Extremely Disappointed!!! To see Caprica was Cancelled, all because of ratings and the switching around of programming!! Bring Caprica Back!!!!
With the quality of cable it is time to drop it finally. All reality shows and advertisements now. When all the cable networks go broke the replacement will have to offer some quality once again.
very sad. Love Caprica. enjoy the not so crazy constant action of it.
No! There is little else on TV worth watching!!!!
Bring Caprica back!
It is outrageous… another victim of the “average taste”. I want Caprica back.
When a friend told me this show was canceled I just couldn’t believe it. I respect that good shows that feature character development are not as popular as good shows featuring action. But this is Science Fiction. That is not all about the action. It is about, well, science fiction. It _can_ be action, but it shouldn’t have to be. I recognize it is all about the advertising dollar (aka ratings). I don’t know why since I, and most everyone I know DVR’s everything now days. So how about everyone who likes this show sends in $100. Would that be… Read more »
What the frack are they thinking? I hate tv these days, why even bother watching anymore. In the last few years every favorite show that I have enjoyed has been canceled. I’m going to cancel my subscription to cable tv because there isn’t anything worthwhile to watch anymore. Why is it once the shows just start getting good they cancel them? No one is going to buy the Season 1 DVD when they know there are not going to be anymore. Morons. I hate you SyFy (dumb name for a channel that doesn’t even have science fiction anymore) Sad!
It all ways seems that just when a good show comes on it gets cancelled because of “ratings”
You know I think the nelson rating is bad, just think of it about 8000 ppl in the US are deciding what the rest of us watch, I mean junk like Dancing with the starts, got Enterprise cancelled, untill they come up with a better survey for ratings we are going to be stuck with some really stupied shows that if we all had votes on, would get cancelled before they got showen!
Well, that’s a relief. I was down to two channels: syfy and bbcamerica. I have cancelled my cable now and I don’t have to worry about missing anything good. Syfy has become wrestling and fake ghost shows and I’m not paying for cable to watch the one good channel that’s left. I’ll miss BBCAmerica, but SciFi is over.
Very disappointed that Caprica has been cancelled…
I was a regular fan of Caprica. I was so excited on the 2nd season and now it has
been cancelled. What are you people crazy. It seems every time we, the people that make you rich, finally like a series you cancel it. WHY WHY WHY
Like you really would give the true reason.
