Syfy has decided to cancel Caprica, the ratings-challenged spin-off of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica (BSG), but the show’s universe isn’t necessarily going away.
In a statement from the cable channel, Mark Stern, EVP of Original Programming, said, “We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing team that has been committed to this fine series. Unfortunately, despite its obvious quality, Caprica has not been able to build the audience necessary to justify a second season.”
Caprica will be pulled from the schedule following the November 2nd episode. According to the statement, “The final five episodes of the season will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011, and will conclude the run of the series.”
This news comes on the heels of the channel’s announced plans for another BSG prequel called Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome. It had previously been described as an online prequel that could possibly serve as a backdoor pilot for a regular series. BSG executive producer David Eick is on board while Ron Moore is not.
Blood & Chrome will have more action and combat sequences, more closely reflecting the reimagined Galactica series. The description reads, “Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet — the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet.”
What do you think? Are you sorry to see Caprica be cancelled? Are you excited to see another BSG prequel series?

A real shame such an intelligent, well-written series should bite the dust. But such is the way, it seems, with anything that delivers a little subtle complexity and requires a bit of thought. In its stead, we’re going to get more “action” and more “blood”. Yay. There’s not nearly enough of that out there. They failed to promote this series properly and, as a result, it didn’t reach the sci-fi fans it should have, the ones who would have given it the ratings it needed for a second season. Too, too, too bad.
SyFy viewers like WWE wrestling better, real sci-fi fans!
So, get over it!
harharhar
Okay, Zoe and Lacy are off to their destinies, but we will not see them in future adventures in their roles as the Mother of the Cylons and Blessed Mother , respectively. Sad, huh?
So, when will see a young Adama?
That really sucks! I loved that show!
I think SyFy people are the most idiotic bunch of idiots out there.
We should simply boycott SyFy just to let them know how we feel.
WWE, reality ghost shows that can never find a single ghost repulse me.
Whoever is in charge should be fired.
I am truly disappointed. I thought the Caprica was one of best sci-fi series to be on television. I actually enjoyed it more than BSG! Thought provoking with elements reflective of society and the environment of today cleverly put in fantasy and drama. How, why, did it go wrong? Not enough explosions? No sexy android robots? A complicated story with too brilliant allegory, multi demential character depth and clever metaphorical situations? We are doomed to television disconnected from our brains! Your guess is as good as mine but I’m afraid that if it’s number 3, then Stargate Universe will be… Read more »
I am extremely disappointed BSG and Caprica is Science fiction at its best ! Even with a financial loss it should be continued I am sure in the future the DVd boxes will make up for the loss Put the thing on prime time I know there will be another prequel to BSG and sequel to Caprica But you have to be less chaotic to keep your audience !
Here we go again, what’s wrong with these TV Executives, you move the time slot over and over again. Have the series stop and start again and wonder why fans have trouble following the series. US TV is all about the Buck, at else UK Tv give series a chance to take on an audience. Where’s the craft, and the respect for your viewers intelligence, that they can watch a drama without a shoot them up before the Ad’s so you can keep their attention. You seem to think that we all have to be spoon feed a story like… Read more »
I am totally bummed, if not pissed that the show was cancelled!!!!!
Yet another poor decision by network executives out of touch with viewers. Caprica had built a fan baase, but the “on-again, off-again” nature of the scheduling made it hard for even dedicated viewers to find the show. Then, switching to Tuesday night was a disaster. Had today’s execs been running networks in the 1980s and 1990s, “Hill St. Blues” and “NYPD Blue” would’ve been cancelled during their first seasons. Imaginative shows that demand intelligence from their viewers just cannot seem to gain a foothold. Thus we lose creative shows like “Life”, “Studio 60”, “Flash Forward” and now “Caprica”. It’s a… Read more »
I was very disappointed when Caprica was cancelled. I don’t get why they are now pushing Battlestar Gallactica. Lorne Green is dead isn’t he? Whats up with the show I like and want to watch being taken away while a show I don’t want to watch is being pushed on me? I still won’t watch Battlestar Galactica, because I’d rather watch Caprica.
Tuesday at 10?! What a shame. I loved the first season of Caprica and was anxious to see the full series.
The real issue not about the cancellation, of Caprica or the potential for a new series with a younger Adama, but the presentation of how it really got started prior to the Twelve Colony; and the realization that the 13th Tribe, the Cylons, migrated to Earth. And the war that brought the Original Five to the reimagined BattleStar Galactica,
I want the producers and writers to complete the whole story instead of just giving us bits and pieces of the Cylons’ Plan! At least Caprica explained how our own civiliation could become Borgs!!!
Okay Syfy. You need to get Your Priorities Straight. Wrestling In place of Caprica?! what kind of Idiocy is that? Wrestling is NOT Science Fiction. Wrestling for the Most Part is Just Fake. Syfy doesn’t agree with the Numbers? People weren’t watching the show Very Much on T.V? well Check the Numbers from before and Now after the Cancellation of Caprica. I personally will Not Watch Any More shows on Syfy for this kind of crap. Bring Caprica back and let it Run it’s Course. Give Caprica time to build up it’s Viewers. Don’t push them away by Cancelling the… Read more »
I’m extremely disappointed that Caprica was canceled. Of course it didn’t help matters for SCYFY channel to move it to Tuesday nights instead of leaving it on Friday. And the fact that I didn’t even know that it was back on until after it aired didn’t help either. Just so SCYFY can air wrestling on Friday nights. Wrestling doesn’t belong on the SCYFY channel at all as far as I’m concerned.
