Coach Hayden Fox is getting back in the game. NBC has given a straight-to-series order for a sequel to the 1990s sitcom Coach.
Starring Craig T. Nelson, Coach ran for nine seasons and 197 episodes on ABC, airing from 1989 until 1997. Shelley Fabares, Jerry Van Dyke, Bill Fagerbakke, and Clare Carey co-starred.
The new version of Coach will star Nelson and pick up 18 years after the end of the original series, in present day. Hayden Fox has retired from coaching but returns to the field as an assistant coach. He’ll help his grown son (Tim in the original series), the new head coach of an Ivy League school in Pennsylvania. It’s unclear if any of the other former castmembers will be part of the new show or when the show will air.
Berry Kemp, who created the original series, will be writing and serve as an executive producer. Nelson will also executive produce. The multi-camera comedy is produced by Universal Television.
The final episode of the original series includes an epilogue that shows Fox retired from coaching and living back in his cabin in Minnesota. He’s raising his son while his wife Christine (Fabares) works at a local TV station. The final scene shows a 10-year-old Tim Fox playing with two young friends who look a lot like his father’s former workmates.
What do you think? Do you like this idea? Will you check out the new version of Coach?
YAWN!
” It’s unclear if any of the other former castmembers will be part of the new show or when the show will air. ”
In actor speak, they’re in talks with former cast members and it depends on whether anyone’s willing to budge on the pay issue as to whether or not any they’ll be in the new show.
I loved Coach back in the day and hope the new version will be as funny. These reunion shows will appeal to the older demographic, but so what? We watch tv and we spend money too.
I’ll tune in as well… But don’t forget, it’s NBC so I’m sure after they get us all interested they’ll keep changing the day &/or time so we can’t find it. After that they’ll say there were no viewers then cancel it. Let’s be prepared for that.
can’t wait
I liked Coach when it was originally on but apparently there is no writing talent in Hollywood these days since they can’t come up with any new ideas. Getting sick of them trying to revive past glory and in this case NBC is reviving a show that was a hit on ABC. NBC is getting desperate. For those wanting more of the original cast back. Shelley Fabares retired and is 71ish just like Craig and Jerry Van Dyck is 83! Is this supposed to appeal to the coveted “key demo” of 18-38 year olds who the lower end weren’t even… Read more »
An assistant football coach at a Pennsylvania college and an adopted son? They really had to go with that back-story line? Will Hayden Fox also be taking showers with young boys at this PA college?
Doesn’t Berry Kemp ever read the news?
I’m looking forward to the return and hope most of the cast will be there.
How could one not watch such a wholesome, family favorable show. I am happy to see it return… Thanks.
