Coach Hayden Fox is getting back in the game. NBC has given a straight-to-series order for a sequel to the 1990s sitcom Coach.
Starring Craig T. Nelson, Coach ran for nine seasons and 197 episodes on ABC, airing from 1989 until 1997. Shelley Fabares, Jerry Van Dyke, Bill Fagerbakke, and Clare Carey co-starred.
The new version of Coach will star Nelson and pick up 18 years after the end of the original series, in present day. Hayden Fox has retired from coaching but returns to the field as an assistant coach. He’ll help his grown son (Tim in the original series), the new head coach of an Ivy League school in Pennsylvania. It’s unclear if any of the other former castmembers will be part of the new show or when the show will air.
Berry Kemp, who created the original series, will be writing and serve as an executive producer. Nelson will also executive produce. The multi-camera comedy is produced by Universal Television.
The final episode of the original series includes an epilogue that shows Fox retired from coaching and living back in his cabin in Minnesota. He’s raising his son while his wife Christine (Fabares) works at a local TV station. The final scene shows a 10-year-old Tim Fox playing with two young friends who look a lot like his father’s former workmates.
What do you think? Do you like this idea? Will you check out the new version of Coach?
Yes! Just finished streaming all nine seasons of Coach and loved it. I would definitely tune in. Craig T Nelson is golden! Would love to see as many of the original the cast mates as possible join in.
Sounds like a great idea. The original coach was a great show.
BRING BACK COACH – WITH THE CAST TO – IT WOULD BE AWESOME!
I was looking forward to it. Yes, I would have watched it. It would have been great if son Tim was a by the book coach and his dad was less so!!
Pls advise on current contact info for Barry Kemp.
Barry is doing The Coach series sequel on NBC.
Thanks… John Brady
Just finished watching Coach again on Netflix….. not like I didn’t see the original … BUT if NBC can do this I bet you would hook the old watchers again…. On the last episode of Coach…..Jerry Van Dyke said he was not leaving the couch as he said the show was not over…..
What a great opening with him on the couch in the cabin saying ” I told you so…..it’s not over…..but no you didn’t want to listen to dumb Jerry………. shows you how much you know!!!! Hard work and perseverance…plus sitting here for almost 20 years”
Yay! Can’t wait! When does it start?
I watched every episode, this is a great idea, can,t wait
I Will watch I watched this series from start to end craig t Nelson is one of my faves and I loved him in parenthood this would be so awesome if he has this amazing opportunity to shine again
Terrific!!!! One of the best sitcoms ever. Enjoyed the Minnesota Screaming Eagles episodes more than the Orlando Breakers ones. The cast had excellent chemistry.
Network TV needs more shows like this.
I’m sooo excited for this. I only hope that it is as funny
As the original. I hope it will be family friendly as well.
I loved Coach and look forward to this great show. Family Friendly? Who cares its 2015 Lets hope Coach and Christine are drunks that swing, steal and cheat on there taxes. Anything to keep Diego from watching.
Hahahaha…. That would be quite a surprise,, Hugh, but why not??? It might attract a large enough following to please the Network Gurus….
Don’t raise your expectations as high as “family friendly” in light of the flurry of sitcom garbage that has swirled in recent years. The Television Code has been stone-dead for many years now.
How many had the look it up to know what the Code was?
Raise your hands…one…two…lets just say millions.

Brilliant!!! But of course I am biased.
