Last month, CBS execs ordered six additional scripts for new medical drama Code Black. They apparently won’t be needing one of them. The network has now decided to produce five more episodes, bringing the first season tally to 18 installments.
Code Black takes place in an Emergency Room in Los Angeles where underfunding and understaffing pile huge pressure on its staff. The cast includes Marcia Gay Harden, Raza Jaffrey, Bonnie Somerville, Melanie Chandra, William Allen Young, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, and Luis Guzman.
Per the live + same day ratings, Code Black has been averaging a 1.23 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.92 million viewers. The Wednesday night drama is the network’s 13th highest rated scripted series (out of 18) in the key demo.
Here’s their announcement:

My favorite new show.I’ll be heartbroken if its cancelled. Fastest hour on TV..
Please give it a chance to get going, its a really excellent show, gripping, heart wrenching, realistic..everything a medical drama should be, I love this show!
As a 72 yr old retired nurse, it is absolutely wonderful and authentic!!!!
62 year old ex EMT and firefighter. I know how you feel.
Love this group of actors. Top of the line with Marsha Gay as “Daddy”.Keep this winner. Great writing MAKES THIS SHOW.
Love this show…it takes a few episodes to grow on you.
RENEW!!! I am a retired firefighter/paramedic with 33 years on the job; I, by nature, hate medical dramas. My wife, a nurse educator with 10 years critical care experience, brought this uniquely intense show to my attention. I’m hooked. Though it’s not the most accurate of ER dramas it’s intensity and variety of fast moving emergencies gives you little time to complain. It is one of the shortest hours of tv I’ve ever watched.
I love this show, the characters are really well written and plaid by amazing cast.
Renew Code Black for season 2!!
Please don’t cancel this show or let MGH leave the title role. It is a quality medical drama reminiscent of St.Elsewhere. Give it a chance to gain a following. Love, love, love it!
Please renew code black. It is a wonderful show with a riviting cast. Way to many great shows are canceled to make room for reality shows or shows that don’t connect with a storyline.
I my husband and I love this show!!! Please don’t take it off the air! There is nothing like it on TV!
Please, please, PLEASE don’t cancel this show!!!! It’s too good to go, has excellent actors and an awesome storyline!! Save it CBS!!!!
I like the show and hope it will be renewed. I enjoy medical shows and like this one best of current choices. It’s not perfect but the cast is strong and the chemistry is very good. I assumed this was a show the network would support and just now realized I might have been wrong. Don’t care for the boss getting a time out and the bitchy temp taking his place. Her attitude didn’t change even after killing a patient. The big pile up on the freeway leading to doctor wanting to retire because she thinks she made a bad… Read more »
Keep the show, it’s a great series.
