As I reported earlier, ABC has chosen to cancel the freshman series Commander in Chief. The series stars Geena Davis as President Mackenzie Allen, the first female President of the United States. The show started off strong (with the critcs and in the ratings) but was then plagued by production issues — and then by a declining viewership. ABC has maintained that they believe in show and, though it will not appear on the Fall 2006 schedule, the show may not be gone for good.
It’s been reported that ABC chief Steve McPherson is actually in talks with Chief creator Rod Lurie to bring the characters back for a two-hour television movie. The deal isn’t finalized as yet but McPherson sounds hopeful they’ll be able to work something out over the summer.
“It’s a fantastic story that Rod has in mind, and there’s still a really dedicated audience for the show,” McPherson said. “It would give Rod a chance to tell a lot of stuff he didn’t get the opportunity to tell and give us another look at it (the concept) in a reconfigured form.” If the movie is produced and is successful, then other Commander in Chief projects may be produced in the future.
For those who can’t wait, be sure to tune in to ABC at the end of the month when the network will air the final three episodes of the first (but hopefully not last) season of Commander in Chief. Episodes are also available for download on
Apple’s online iTunes store.
This is disgusting! To cancel a show this good is ludicrous. Why not cancel crap like a reality show.
oh ya those shows really suck.
I enjoyed the show very much. It is nice to see a woman playing the President of the United States on a series. The show in very interesting and captivating. Please bring it back. I am not a person that views political attire shows. But, this one caught my attention.
Commander and chief was one of the most motivational shows produced on tv. ABC has their fall line up and it shows Dancing with the Stars instead of Commander and Chief LOL…… I watch Dancing with the stars but its no match for Mac and Templeton ……da.
If the producers of the network care anything for its viewers, I suggest a reevl. on the final desicion to get rid of something that’s already so great…..
Thanks, Andrea
Ask and ye shall receive…..
I’ve already started a petition to bring back Commander In Chief. I’ve also come across 2 other petitions doing the same. Here are all the petition links so far…

PLEASE pass on the news to your friends and other known fans of CIC. Thanks so much!!!!!
I was very sad to hear that the show was getting cancel, however i think that if they are really thinking of making a movie after the season ends, it will be a great way of ending the show, because being real i can’t picture a season 3or 4 of this show, think about it. It started with the president not being elected but replacing a dead president, everything is great now, but once her 2 year period is over, is she gonna win the elections? and what about her marriage or her kids??? the show will be boring then,… Read more »
Commander-in-chief was a great show, with great plots and great ideas. COME ON!!! Lets start a petition!! I love this show. Even if they do cancel it though, the Season 1 will be on DVD, and there will be a movie. I’m just sad that that might be it. LETS PETITION IN FRONT OF THE ABC HEADQUARTERS!
Bring back Commander in Chief! How could the abc execs cancel show? This is a travisty! Woman are here to stay, you can’t win by cancelling this show!
I really enjoyed this show. I hope it will be brought back.
I can’t believe that this show is being cancelled. It is very disappointing to see this go….
Cannot believe that abc just cancelled an awsome
show like this, it was very interesting and the acting was great. Gina is such a pro and was fantastic in the part, as were all of the actors,
I certainly hope that they will bring this show back
it was very dissapointing when the show was no longer on, it was a family favorite and we miss it.
I believed that this program was so intelligent, so thought-provoking,and so well-acted that I followed it with no small difficulty all over the calendar and a range of time slots. And now it’s cancelled??? Who makes these decisions and what on earth were they thinking? Count me in on the petition.
Are you all a group of wimps? Where is your NYPD Blue guts? Is a woman president that scary? Such a great show and you sure have made a mess of it. This is an intelligent show like West Wing, and can even be better. What happened to all that enthusiasm? Your opening should not show the coming attractions, but should show all the “women” in politics from all over the world and then go into the story. Maybe a 2 hr. movie is not a bad idea as long as it is considered a season premiere. Don’t let this… Read more »
I’m getting tired of intelligent shows being cancelled. Not just drama, but comedy as well. “Commander In Chief” creates a platform that allows for serious and real topics to be brought forth in a way that brings perspective and provokes thought for the viewer. An enjoyable show with a talented cast. I love the show (TIVO – Season Pass). And even so, I feel the show could do MUCH more, given the chance and maybe some additional intelligent writers/producers. America cares about what it’s told to care about. If CIC gets another chance, it should definitely take some chances. Push… Read more »
I can’t believe such a great show would be cancelled!!! This was one show that my family all watched together, and we talked about it afterward. There was some really thought-provoking stuff going on.
If there’s a petition to get this show back on the air, I’ll definitely sign it.
I so enjoyed this program. It was intelligent, thoght provoking and fascinating to watch. I am very disappointed with ABC in not renewing this show for another season. I can’t believe they’d rather have a show like the Bachelor over this one. It presents a very sad commentary on our society if that’s what some people’s values are.
I would love to see some kind of petition circulating to let the executives know what the viewers prefer to watch.
I find it hard to believe that winning an Emmy bears no weight.
