Is there a future for Downward Dog and The Carmichael Show? Deadline reports the cast contracts for both the ABC and NBC TV series expire soon.
A new ABC sitcom, Downward Dog premiered in May. The comedy centers on Nan (Allison Tolman) and is narrated by her philosophically inclined and rather forlorn dog, Martin (voiced by Sam Hodges). The cast also includes Lucas Neff, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Barry Rothbart, Siovhan Christensen, Ayden Mayeri, and Andrew Gorell.
The Carmichael Show is currently in its third season on NBC. The sitcom loosely inspired by star and co-creator Jerrod Carmichael’s family life and also features Amber Stevens West, David Alan Grier, Lil Rel Howery, and Loretta Devine.
According to Deadline, the cast’s contracts for both series expire on June 30th and so far neither have been renewed for another season. Does this mean both are cancelled? It’s unclear. Ratings for Downward Dog have been okay. So far, season one is averaging a .80 rating in the 18-49 demo and 4.016 million viewers.
Meanwhile, ratings for The Carmichael Show have been steady for the past few seasons. Currently, season three is averaging a .80 rating in the 18-49 demo and 3.668 million viewers. However, even with stable ratings, it’s unclear if NBC will renew The Carmichael Show for a fourth season or if ABC will give Downward Dog a second chance. Either way, the networks and the studios only have a few days to decide.

I am really enjoying Downward Dog and I hope it gets picked up for another season. I agree that it is the best new show on network TV. I love that it doesn’t have a laugh track and that it isn’t one stupid joke after another. The cast is excellent, including Martin, the dog. It’s very well written and insightful and it’s interesting to hear the dog’s point of view. PLEASE DON’T CANCEL THIS SWEET SHOW!!!

Like…you know in life sometimes things take a longer time to really..really appreciate….like that new dog food Nan bought me.. I thought it was ok at first… But then…I couldn’t wait for the time when Nan opened the can…I felt all warm and cozy.. sort of peaceful…that Nan was giving me this special treat..this special treat that I want..no I need ..to continue…so I can feel that warm cozy peaceful feeling..that we all need.

I love Downward Dog! It’s my thirty minutes of “leave me alone” time while I sit directly in front of the tv like a child. The writers are brilliant!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Downward Dog. The best new show in a very long time. I certainly hope some other network picks it up. Rearranged my Tuesday evening schedule to watch. Great cast, well written and a refreshing departure from t.v. as usual.
As a fan of The Carmicheal Show if it is a happening about the series pick up for a fourth season and so I say is that I just can’t wait to see if that will really be a good happening .

Best show this summer. I tell everyone. So many don’t know about it. Give it a chance. This is a quality program with great writing. Once you see it you love it. Just not a great title. Please promote more!
