Empire wrapped season two on FOX on Wednesday night, and events from the finale will have an impact on season three. Do not continue reading on if you have not watch last night’s finale.
Lucious will have a lot on his plate next season, according to the executive producer of the series. Ilene Chaiken revealed to Deadline the big story that will be the focus of season three. She said:
“Dramatically Season 3, and we set it up in this finale, is a battle for the soul of Empire. It’s dark versus light, it’s Lucious versus Jamal in large part, because Jamal after being shot vows to end this thing. Cookie’s fighting for the souls of each of her sons, knowing that Jamal is on the far side slouching towards the light, and Lucious is throwing down his dark gauntlet and trying to claim everyone’s soul.”
Fans will see some familiar faces next season that popped up at the end of season two. Tariq and Shyne will both be back. Chaiken revealed the following to Entertainment Weekly:
“Yes. We’re working on season 3 right now, and the finale, with all of its big cliffhangers, really sets the tone for what’s next. The third season of Empire is a Godfather-styled opus of crime and hip-hop. That’s really what we’re doing, and the fact that Tariq is Lucious’ half-brother makes it that much more dark and twisted and personal.”
Fans will also see more of Lucious’ mother next season. Empire may have seen a dip in the ratings as season two progressed, but the series is still one of the top shows on television. Fans will definitely see more soap opera like drama next fall.

I binged watch Season 1 and 2 of Empire and I LOVED it! Great acting by all. Great music! Can’t wait to see who turns on who, the continuing deceit, and more family dysfunction, in Season 3. Also looking forward to more great music. Television needs Empire!
stopped watching season 2 after the first two episodes. It became boring. Same back and forth within the family. Not enough new writing to keep it fresh. Not interested in season 3.
