It looks like Syfy is staying in space. Deadline reports the network has renewed The Expanse for a third season.
Based on the James S. A. Corey book series, the sci-fi drama is set centuries into the future where Earth’s population has ballooned to over 30 billion and humans have colonized the solar system. The cast includes Thomas Jane, Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, Chad L. Coleman, and Shawn Doyle.
The Expanse is currently in the middle of its second season. And while ratings haven’t been great, the series is currently one of Syfy’s top-rated programs. So far, season two is averaging a .20 in the 18-49 demo with 600,000 viewers.
Syfy has ordered 13 episodes for season three of The Expanse, which is slated to debut in 2018.
From NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment chief Chris McCumber:
The Expanse is a gorgeous, thrilling, emotional series that has quite simply raised the bar for science fiction on television. We, along with the fans, are looking forward to continuing the journey with our partners at Alcon Television Group and the series’ brilliant cast and crew.”
What do you think? Do you watch The Expanse? Are you glad it’s been renewed?
I would add to my previous comment that technically, this is the best Sci Fi space faring, I have ever seen produced. Simply excellent. Very pleased to see Season 3 is a go.
Great series: Books and TV. Season 2 a bit of a let down…could have done 2 more episodes to complete it…showing the protomolecule developing in and leaving Venus …to become the Ring… and as a finale, the little diy racer and the kid within flying at it at 500,000km/hr..great way to start Season 3..IMHO.
In spite of all the praise and hype about this show, I must say that I found season 2 very disappointing overall, and frustrating in general. Season 1 was great, ending with a civilization-rocking revelation and a potentially cataclysmic astronomical event in the inner solar system. I found the character development and world-building to be well-balanced and well-paced…in season 1. Then came season 2…where literally NOTHING happened to advance any of the major plot lines. The entirety of season 2 is nothing more than the introduction of new minor characters and minor plotline development…manufactured suspense and events that serve ONLY… Read more »
I agree with everything you said but still going to watch the third season.
Great show from some very good books. I do wonder tho if the Syfy channel is trying to shoot themselves in the foot by not putting it out for general release. Here there is no “legal” way to watch the series other than wait for the release on DVD/Bluray, that surely must hurt their ratings. I’m still waiting for the first series to be released over here, thankfully I got it on Bluray about 6months after the series aired in the US.

Love this show ! Great SyFy with a solid story line and acting. Very pleased the Expanse will be back for season 3.
Glad to hear this show gets to last at least one more season. Hope there are even more. What I really appreciate about this show is the technical and political possibilities in this show. None of the hocus pocus transporters and similar that are far too technically infeasible to make sense (Don’t get me wrong, I Love Star Trek and the like, But, I sincerely appreciate when sci fi stories are strongly grounded in feasible technology). Also the political system portrayed makes at lot of sense too. And, who doesn’t LOVE LOVE LOVE Christen Avasarala’s fashion and the Actress, Shohren… Read more »
Best show on tv, syfy should complete all the books, promise to watch every episode☺
That’s Great !
We are lacking of smart SyFy show like this. I’m glad that’s renewed for a 3rd season.
This show is great, SNG level sci-fi. Groundbreaking.
I watched the first episode of season 1 and had no idea what was happening. So I read up on it at the SyFy site. I knew what was going on and the episodes also became more interesting. In season two they are starting to lose me. I don’t want to watch diplomats on Earth talk for half the show. The show is starting to get a little boring. This is SyFy, not House of Cards. For season 3 they need to decide what they are trying to do with this show.
When watching season 1 I had a hard time following the story, it wasn’t always clear yet I stayed all the way because it’s been years since we ‘ve had a really well done and “proper” sci-fy serie and I enjoyed it tremendously even though I sometimes felt I was not fed all the information thru the show. After season 1 ended I read the books and I rewatched the entire season 1, I took time between seasons to read enough to follow the sublteties of the plot that aren’t on the screen. I admit it is a problem, one… Read more »
The plot happens during a time of earth-mars coldwar, so politic manoeuvers are obviously a big part of the storyline. There will always be 2 or 3 storylines giving different views of the conflict/investigation/conspiracy, with their own (short) subplots for character-building and universe expanding. The show does not much of hand-holding and needs the viewer to pat close attention to everything being said and done in all the parallel storylines, and make sense of it. There are a few “checkpoints” when storylines cross and you get a better idea of the big picture, but most of the time, you gotta… Read more »
It is about time upper management has recognized that the fans are a loyal bunch and will stick with a good sci-fi show regardless of the, “Rating-Gods”. Too bad the same fortitude was not with the powers-that-be when it came time to renew “Defying Gravity”.
I originally gave up on season 1, 3 episodes in. I’ve seen so many good reviews for it, that i gave it another shot, and man am i glad that i did. The show got much better, after episode 3. Just binged season 1, getting ready to start the season 2 episodes, that are sitting on my dvr.
Sweet! This show is amazing, and really great quality in both characters and set design.
thank god 🙂
DONKEY BALLS! That’s awesome.
