It looks like Syfy is staying in space. Deadline reports the network has renewed The Expanse for a third season.
Based on the James S. A. Corey book series, the sci-fi drama is set centuries into the future where Earth’s population has ballooned to over 30 billion and humans have colonized the solar system. The cast includes Thomas Jane, Steven Strait, Shohreh Aghdashloo, Dominique Tipper, Cas Anvar, Wes Chatham, Frankie Adams, Chad L. Coleman, and Shawn Doyle.
The Expanse is currently in the middle of its second season. And while ratings haven’t been great, the series is currently one of Syfy’s top-rated programs. So far, season two is averaging a .20 in the 18-49 demo with 600,000 viewers.
Syfy has ordered 13 episodes for season three of The Expanse, which is slated to debut in 2018.
From NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment chief Chris McCumber:
The Expanse is a gorgeous, thrilling, emotional series that has quite simply raised the bar for science fiction on television. We, along with the fans, are looking forward to continuing the journey with our partners at Alcon Television Group and the series’ brilliant cast and crew.”
What do you think? Do you watch The Expanse? Are you glad it’s been renewed?
I’m so sick of good shows being cancelled void of an actual ending. Who decides what gets cut? They could at least give us an actual logical ending. Ratings don’t mean anything. We often watch off a DVR because of multiple programs and schedules. Seems like the good shows always get cancelled, yet stupid reality shows like ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians’ plague our tv channels. I’m really sick of the tons to talent shows on prime time and the ridiculous survivor/ tough guy type trash that should be on one network that people can pay to watch. Are the… Read more »
Man I watched this series and Dark Matter, which I just learned got cancelled. People really need to spread the word about this show to keep its ratings up so it doesn’t get cancelled. The new Star Trek Discovery is totally meh compared to the Expanse.
This is actually the best show on tv right now by a wide margin and no one knows about it. It truly captures the essence of science fiction with its sense of the wonder of the unknown and its critique of societal trends extrapolated into the future.
I also like the idea of a long story arc based on a successful book. Most other dramas on tv are procedural, banal and predictible.
Love a show that makes you think. Read the books (up to #5) twice. Television version not exactly the same as the books but close enough to get out the snacks every week. No, I do not answer the phone in this time slot! (I also record each episode and then watch it again.) Sci-Fi is the best. Please advertise as this is a beautifully acted, scripted, and filmed series. (Though I am getting better at understanding the “Belters’ ” language, I need a lot more practice so keep the show on the air.
I thoroughly enjoyed season two and am excited to see what happens in season three!! Bring it on!!
Oddly enough, I’m not a fan of The Expanse (just finished season 1, prob not going to bother with season 2). To compare, I recently came across Defying Gravity – a series that ran for one season in 2009. I know there was network drama with it (ABC’s lack of marketing vs Scyfy interest to begin with), but it totally blows away The Expanse. The graphics and acting are great in The Expanse, but honestly just don’t care for the writing or characters. Defying Gravity was fantastic all around – give it a watch. And no, it’s not the Grey’s… Read more »
Love the show and yes I want to see more! Very glad a season 3 is coming….excited and can’t wait!!! I was worried it was cancelled but not now. Great cast and script writing….please keep them coming. A big fan
Love the series! Just needed a little more advertising. We accidentally came upon it thru an ad via a game. So happy we did.
