After five seasons on the air, CBS has killed a staple of the Friday night schedule. Ghost Whisperer won’t be back next fall on the Tiffany network. Not unless it can come back from the dead…
Ghost Whisperer tells the tale of Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt), a young woman with the ability to see and talk to dead people. Regular castmembers over the past five seasons have included David Conrad, Camryn Manheim, Jay Mohr, Aisha Tyler, Christoph Sanders, Jamie Kennedy, and Kenneth Mitchell.
The TV show debuted in September 2005 and the season attracted an average of a 2.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 10.2 million viewers. In seasons two and three, the demo rose to a 3.0 rating with 9.9 and 8.6 million viewers respectively. For season four, the ratings went up again, to a 3.7 rating and 10.6 million viewers.
Unfortunately this year, the ratings fell — a lot. The season kicked off with a 2.3 rating and 8.7 million viewers. Things went further downhill from there. Last month, they hit a series low with a 1.3 rating in the demo and 5.96 million viewers. Though Ghost Whisperer was once a hit show for the network, those times are clearly over.
To little surprise, CBS has decided to cancel Ghost Whisperer. The series finale is set to air this Friday, May 21st.
However, because ABC Studios co-produces the series (with CBS), there have been discussions that it could switch networks. Medium ran for years on NBC before being cancelled and picked up by CBS.
ABC’s entertainment president, Stephen McPherson, has said that he’d be interested in picking up Ghost Whisperer if the series became available. ABC scheduler Jeff Bader told Variety today that they’ve toyed with the idea. He said, “We talked a lot about it. It could make a good lead-in to Body of Proof.”
To keep costs down, ABC has been committed to running only one scripted series on Friday nights but the execs will supposedly look at the possibility of picking up Ghost Whisperer in the next few days.
What do you think? Should ABC pick up Ghost Whisperer for season six or should it stay cancelled?

To the person who felt the need to sit and teach all of us about the “power switch”..guess what. I do hold the remote in my house. I can and will chose to watch the shows I want to watch. And if I decide NOT to watch CBS or ABC…then so be it. There are plenty of other networks I can watch. So far, I haven’t heard of any new shows on either channel that have caught my attention..so, good riddance CBS and ABC…You took off the best show on Friday…so bye!
Please pick up this show. I have watched this show faithfully since the beginning with my teenage daughter. We both agree that they do need to do something with the story line though. Since the Kid has come on the show it is not as interesting, he does not work well with the show, he doesn’t fit in the family, he just doesn’t work at all. They need to change the character and stop jumping forward so far. Maybe a year or so but five desn’t work. They should keep going with this show but adjust it up a little.
Abc has to pick it up I love the show CBS is stupid for dropping it
one of the best tv show i ever see plz don’t cancel this show maybe you lost rating because the writer weren’t making a good job look back to see what were you guys did the you didn’t do in the last season I love your show and I will miss Melinda Gordon R.I.P
Please bring Ghost Whisperers back on. I love watching it on-line & I love the story line. So I think it would be great if ABC can bring back this show.
Please please please pick it up! This is the only TV show I’d get to sit down and watch with the whole family on Friday nights!!! My teen age son and daughter would be so excited about it. And you bet if we were out of town it was on our DVR. I am so sad to think it may be off the air..Actually I don’t want to tell my kids….booooo….COME BACK…PLEASE COME BACK!!!!!I think it would be a good choice for ABC too, since I personally don’t watch too much on ABC, besides, Wheel of Fortune and The Bachelor/Bachelorette.
I just recently started watching Ghost Whisperer and I’m addicted. I love the stories, the characters and I think Jennifer Love Hewitt is amazing. Please don’t cancel the show. I really enjoy it.
that was a great show, i looked forward to watching ghost whisperer and the medium
Yes!!!!!! They really need to pick this show up, I will be SO upset if they do not continue. Alot of people would agree.
I just watch, “The Client List”, and I know an GOOD Actress can pick up any role and make it there own, which I think she did, BUT at the same time ALL through the show, I kept thinking, “Quit messing around Jennifer, YOUR Melendia Gordon, go BACK to GW” And NOT for just for me, BUT just look at ALL the support you have out there!! SO take another look CBS, it WAS A BIG mistake to take her and the show off, WE ALL LOVE HER & WILL MISS HER!!
PLEASE keep her on,
A bleading heart, Misty
PLEASE don’t cancel Ghost Whisperer, such a great show!!!
i Love Ghost Whisper. I just found out about the show on the station Ion and have since become addicted to it. Now they have moved ion to a higher channel and i can only watch it in one room. I guess because the million views that watched it is still interested, obviously. I wish someone would pick it up again. Im just screaming to see what happens next in Malinda’s life.
The latest season was horrible when after a riveting last season, the writers and plot suddenly went fast-forward five years and not only made Jim a doctor/resident in the ER, but added an ugly annoying kid. That did it for me. I lost all interest and I never watched again after watching every Friday for years! Anybody at the network who can’t figure out how the writers screwed up is a fool.
LOL, I know the kid wasn’t the cutest… I didn’t agree with the flash forward either, but overall it did make for a new subject line. I would be happy to atleast settle for one last season to end the series on a better note….
please dont cancel ghost whisperer ive watched from the beginning the best show ive seen is a long time…
I love that show! I’d watch it on whatever network showed it!
