The Goldbergs are moving up a decade. Deadline reports ABC has ordered a new spin-off pilot set in the 1990s.
From Adam F. Goldberg and Marc Firke, the sitcom will star Bryan Callen (and possibly Tim Meadows) as “two high school teachers who become unlikely father figures to the kids at their Philadelphia school, the same school Adam (Sean Giambrone) graduated from.” Callen recurs as Mr. Mellor on The Goldbergs and will reprise the role for the spin-off.
Goldberg described the ABC series during last month’s Television Critics Association press tour:
For me, every show that’s about teachers, and there’s been a number of them, they’re like misfits who hate the kids and don’t want to be there and hate their jobs. For me, having crazy parents, my teachers were the sane people who raised me, and they liked being there. They don’t make a ton of money, but they’re heroes. And I wanted to wish a positive show where it’s not having teachers being down in the teacher’s lounge smoking cigarettes.”
And will there be a crossover with The Goldbergs?:
Right now, Beverly (Wendi McLendon-Covey) is scripted to be in the pilot. So there’s a lot of crossover with the Goldbergs show.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of The Goldbergs? Would you watch the spin-off?
