When ABC put Happy Town on hiatus in May, many assumed that it had been cancelled and wouldn’t be returning. The ratings were pretty terrible and ABC has since canceled the mystery series. However, the network had always planned to bring it back after a three week break. Now that it’s back, will we get some answers or be left hanging?
Happy Town follows the residents of a small town in Minnesota who are terrorized by a killing spree from the mysterious “Magic Man.” The cast includes Sam Neill, M.C. Gainey, Geoff Stults, Lauren German, Amy Acker, Steven Weber, Ben Schnetzer, Sarah Gadon, Jay Paulson, and Robert Wisdom.
Because viewers have been burned so many times over the years (FlashForward anyone?), people are understandably very reluctant to get hooked on a new series that has lots of ongoing mysteries. Happy Town won’t be back for season two but loyal viewers thankfully won’t be left totally in the dark.
The cast and creators addressed viewer concerns in several early interviews and said that there will be some closure by the end of the season. The identity of the mysterious “Magic Man” will be revealed to the audience in episode eight but that doesn’t mean that Tommy Conroy (Stults) and some of the other characters will necessarily find out.
Executive producer Josh Appelbaum told IF that many people on set really got into the mystery. He said, “The crew had this betting pool as to who the “Magic Man” was. The first two episodes are what they are, but the third and fourth episodes, they started getting obsessed with it. The great thing was, of the hundred and fifty crew members, three people got it right, which was perfect…. So it’s an answer that’s there if you’re thinking about it and you’re playing along smartly, but I think it’ll blow most people’s minds.”
Stults echoed those feelings and said, “I’ve never been on a show before where people, even crew members, gave a s***. Every week, more of the crew people were asking for scripts so they could read them. I’m telling you, between every take, people were gathered around the monitor constantly talking about, ‘Well I have this idea’ and ‘I have that idea.’ It took on a life of its own, so much so that there was an office pool going to see who could figure out who the “Magic Man” was.”
He continued, “Everybody had to sign a confidentiality thing and there was this whole idea that we going to not tell the crew and just shoot with a skeleton crew and not let anybody know, but the crew got so up in arms, because they really got invested and they really felt like they were a part of this and they wanted to know as well. They were pissed that they weren’t going to get told. So we decided, Josh and Scott and Andre and I, we decided, ‘We’ve gotta tell these guys. They’re a part of it.’ They wanted to know, so we had a whole presentation and it was great. There were actually a few people who had guessed it and I was really surprised.”
Stults told TV Guide, “[The audience] will be surprised. And, not only that but, once the audience finds out, they’ll be like ‘Ohh, I can’t believe I didn’t think of that’ or ‘Oh, I can’t believe I didn’t see that.’ Because there are clues. And the same thing happened to me, once I found out, I was like, ‘You idiot! How could you not see that? I was there everyday, right in front of me!’ so it was pretty earth-shattering in that way.”
Had the series been renewed for a second season, Stults has said that the “Magic Man” reveal would have really shaken things up and Happy Town would have gone in a new direction.
What do you think? Will you still watch even though the show’s been cancelled? Any guesses on the identity of the “Magic Man?”

I was hoping chller channel or syfy would pick it up but it would be great if one of the cable networks like TNT would buy it and continue the show at least for another season.
I am just about to quit watching network TV altogether. (And I’m a HUGE TV watcher, so that would be a big deal.) I am so tired of watching creative new shows get canceled (Firefly, Dollhouse, Defying Gravity, now Happy Town), while the same old BS medical shows get renewed and renewed and renewed (I am SO SICK of House, already!).
But wonderful cable. Bringing us something different, and sticking with it – Burn Notice, Psych, and Royal Pains are all new twists on the same basic ideas (spies, police, and medical). So I’m going cable.
I’m with the others who have said they are disappointed to see the show canceled. Maybe I have no taste in TV shows but every time I really become interested in a show I find it is canceled. It is good to see I was not alone on this one. There is a lot of “trash television” being aired; this one was a good change of pace.
I think it’s the crazy lady mayor of Happytown… she doesn’t get her own hands dirty, but has enough power and money to hire anything done she wants done.
Don’t stop watching a station because they cancel 1 show because there are others you might like. It’s a shame they won’t give a show a chance because its like JAY W says sometimes we start a show by accident or like me I plan ahead. I loved JAG but my Mother was the one who watched it and got me watching it. Sometimes a show doesn’t quite interest us but when they cancel the shows so quick they just waste money and damage our faith and respect in the station/network
I really like the suspense and thrill of the show, it is a shame that ABC executives really don’t know their audience anymore. I don’t like the network anymore, I have stopped watching it on tv and I am moving to Fox. ABC sucks for killing shows so soon I hope they go out of business soon. 😉
I’m a huge fan of Happy Town and am extremely disappointed that ABC is cancelling it.
For the time being I think Steven Weber’s mother is some how connected to the MAGIC MAN
I really like this show and I am very angry at ABC for cancelling so many shows that I like. This show should be in a 9pm slot to get more viewers. The show also should not have been put on hiatus so quickly, before it hooked people. Now that is announced that it will be cancelled, many people won’t start watching. My family are complete LOST fanatics, and we didn’t start watching until season 2, and since then never misses an episode. Give shows a chance.
It all seems pretty Twin Peaks to me. The old sheriff cut off his left hand, the man who wrote the note from Lauren was left handed – maybe he has split personality. And who is Henley/Chloe, and how does old sheriff know her real name?
They cancelled this show after only damn episode! C’mon, give me a break! How can a series gain viewership when things like this happen? Especially with all the drivel on TV that doesn’t get cancelled. When someone has an idea for a great show they should just pitch it right to cable or HBO. FX, TNT, USA do right by their shows. Look how NBC treated a great show like “Southland”. Thank God TNT got the show and is running with the ball. This show (Happy Town) is turning out pretty good but it will be gone in no time.
Every penny I own is on Dot Meadows. She was the keeper of the creepy bird hammer. I’ll definitely miss this show. From the first episode, though, I kept hoping that a relationship between Henley and Merritt Grieves would develop. The setting was there from the first episode.
This is a great SHOW. How about this idea… It’s the new sheriff in town… He doesn’t realize it but it is!…. Ok maybe not it’s probably John Haplin and Andrew Haplin continuing his work. Love this show! ABC you are a typical network ******** up a good show before it gets started. Please bring back HAPPY TOWN!!!
Thank you for bringing this series back and letting there be a ending. This is 2nd series that I liked (Harper’s Island) and even if it is one season I will buy – it’s like a long movie. Many of us like this show because its like we are part of it (playing detective) to
see if we can guess who is quilty first.
A new series rarely gets a chance to catch on and then were are left wondering why even start. At least when this ends we are happy because there is a ending to a mystery.
Kee, keep watching as there will be an answer at the end of the eight episodes that are being shown to us. There might not be any more Happy Town but the creators of the series were well prepared for whatever fate handed them. So enjoy the show while we have it. ()(\.
