A couple months ago, NBC premiered a new legal TV series from David E. Kelley called Harry’s Law. The series started out decently in the ratings but has fallen quite a bit since then. Tonight is the season finale. Will it be back for season two or end up cancelled?
Harry’s Law revolves around Harriet “Harry” Korn (Kathy Bates), a cranky former patent lawyer. She’s abruptly fired from a big firm, forcing Harry to search for a fresh start. She finds it when she meets Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a college student who desperately needs her help and ends up working for her. A young legal hotshot named Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) accidentally hits Harry and gives up his corporate job to join the team. With the help of Harry’s footwear-obsessed assistant, Jenna (Brittany Snow), they open for business as Harriet’s Law and Fine Shoes.
The NBC series debuted in January with a 2.2 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 11.07 million viewers. That was an improvement of nearly 50% in the demo when compared to the last original episode of Chase, the previous timeslot occupant and NBC has had a hard time filling that spot for quite some time. The second episode only came down 5% to a 2.1 rating and 10.43 million. Week three held steady. It was looking like NBC had a hit — or as close as the network seems to get these days.
Then, the fourth installment took a big tumble, dropping 19% to a 1.7 demo rating and 9.22 million. It stayed at that level for a couple weeks, popped up to a 1.8 rating, and has most recently been holding steady at a 1.6 rating. That’s pretty close to what Chase had been doing and that’s all but cancelled.
Tonight marks the twelfth and final episode of the season and Harry’s Law is averaging a 1.8 rating and 9.54 million viewers. It’s the 10th highest rated scripted series on the network, tied with Chuck. On the other big networks, the series would certainly doomed but NBC has lots of ratings problems.
In truth, based on the demo numbers alone, NBC shouldn’t bring back this series for a second season. However, though it ranks towards the bottom of the demo rankings, it’s the most-watched TV show on the network. Though that doesn’t count for much, considering the state of NBC, it may be enough to get Harry’s Law a renewal.
On the other hand, with David E. Kelley likely having another series on NBC next season — the new Wonder Woman — network execs might prefer that he focus on that one and let Harry’s Law go. If they don’t like the Wonder Woman pilot, that may be enough to save Kathy Bates and company.
NBC probably won’t reveal the fate of Harry’s Law until the advertiser upfronts on May 16th. We’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Should Harry’s Law be renewed or cancelled? If it does comes back, how would you suggest they change it to attract more viewers?

Please, Please do not cancel HARRY’S LAW….love this show , love Kathy Bates, love the actors, they all make the show….please take a poll, please…..getting an intelligent funny show with all the issues is not easy, why would you take said show off ???????
KEEP THIS SHOW ON…..PLEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love Harry’s Law!!! I heard rumors that it again may be cancelled. I love its theatricality and the larger than life characters and I love that its stories fight for the little guy and the disenfranchised. I fear that since it’s not an action drama, it may not appeal to young guys who anchor themselves in front of the TV.
We don’t miss this show on NBC. I have no care to watch Wonder Woman and would not no matter the writer. Bring this show back – at least the entire family is able to watch and it is a show and not reality tv.
I love it, dont take it off, Please.
It never fails. The powers that be put on a show with some intelligent characters and stores and it is cancelled. I love Harry’s Law. For that matter, I like Prime Suspect, another of my favorites. I am so tired of mindless tripe (reality shows) and would love it if people in power would just give us more like Harry’s Law and Prime Suspect.

We loved Harry’s Law last season but have been very disappointed this year. We do not like it when episodes are not completed in one night’s show. We hate that the original store front is not more…we hate the writers changed from using a “commujity based” stories. We enjoyed the ealier characters…the efforts at helping the disadvantaged…of showing a minority group as bright and well meaning with the help of kathy bates adn others…all that is gone this year…we switched channels!
every once in a while a show comes along that has a wonderful cast and delightful and refreshing setting. one looks forward to this different entertainment thinking FINALLY! something truly enjoyable and you cant wait to see it again. Then the new season starts and heaven only knows why the powers that be have decided to take away that uniqueness and replace it with the banality of so many other lawyer shows. What was wrong with that quirky little shoe store. If they wanted to bring the other lawyers together under on roof then why didnt they work on expanding… Read more »
I love Harry’s Law. My only concern is what happen to the young black man who was trying to better his life. DO NOT CANCEL!
Kathy Bates is just great in Harry’s Law and I look forward to seeing it every week. Actually, all the participants in the show are perfect!! If this show is cancelled, I would question the sanity of NBC. With all the reality shows and movies from the 1930’s & 1940’s there isn’t a lot of really good shows to watch! DO NOT CANCEL!
i loved harrys law and looked forward to it each week. Please dont cancel the show.
I hate shows that can not complete a story in one episode. I will not watch a story that I probably will not see the end of, it is too frustrating in an already frustrating world of marginal entertainment.
I love the show. it is witty, intelligent and a delight. probably why it will be dumped!
I love this show, its funny, yet plenty of drama. Love the charaters. Can’t remember how it ended, and last night was a bit confused on the new office set up and staff. I thought she got shot, but some how I must have missed something.
Please keep this on this show is my fav its very refreshing, and an awsome family show
I normally don’t watch a lot of shows, but Kathy Bates is a winner all the way with me. I will definitely be watching. Unfortunately, when left up to the executives, the really good shows with superb acting get cancelled in favor of a realty shouting matches. That explains the sad state that TV is in. Bring on more quality programs like Harry’s Law. It would help if you lightened up her character every once in a while.
I loved Harry’s Law and so does the entire family. We don’t normally watch NBC but if Harry’s Law comes back so will we.
