A couple months ago, NBC premiered a new legal TV series from David E. Kelley called Harry’s Law. The series started out decently in the ratings but has fallen quite a bit since then. Tonight is the season finale. Will it be back for season two or end up cancelled?
Harry’s Law revolves around Harriet “Harry” Korn (Kathy Bates), a cranky former patent lawyer. She’s abruptly fired from a big firm, forcing Harry to search for a fresh start. She finds it when she meets Malcolm Davies (Aml Ameen), a college student who desperately needs her help and ends up working for her. A young legal hotshot named Adam Branch (Nate Corddry) accidentally hits Harry and gives up his corporate job to join the team. With the help of Harry’s footwear-obsessed assistant, Jenna (Brittany Snow), they open for business as Harriet’s Law and Fine Shoes.
The NBC series debuted in January with a 2.2 rating in the prized 18-49 demographic and 11.07 million viewers. That was an improvement of nearly 50% in the demo when compared to the last original episode of Chase, the previous timeslot occupant and NBC has had a hard time filling that spot for quite some time. The second episode only came down 5% to a 2.1 rating and 10.43 million. Week three held steady. It was looking like NBC had a hit — or as close as the network seems to get these days.
Then, the fourth installment took a big tumble, dropping 19% to a 1.7 demo rating and 9.22 million. It stayed at that level for a couple weeks, popped up to a 1.8 rating, and has most recently been holding steady at a 1.6 rating. That’s pretty close to what Chase had been doing and that’s all but cancelled.
Tonight marks the twelfth and final episode of the season and Harry’s Law is averaging a 1.8 rating and 9.54 million viewers. It’s the 10th highest rated scripted series on the network, tied with Chuck. On the other big networks, the series would certainly doomed but NBC has lots of ratings problems.
In truth, based on the demo numbers alone, NBC shouldn’t bring back this series for a second season. However, though it ranks towards the bottom of the demo rankings, it’s the most-watched TV show on the network. Though that doesn’t count for much, considering the state of NBC, it may be enough to get Harry’s Law a renewal.
On the other hand, with David E. Kelley likely having another series on NBC next season — the new Wonder Woman — network execs might prefer that he focus on that one and let Harry’s Law go. If they don’t like the Wonder Woman pilot, that may be enough to save Kathy Bates and company.
NBC probably won’t reveal the fate of Harry’s Law until the advertiser upfronts on May 16th. We’ll keep you posted.
What do you think? Should Harry’s Law be renewed or cancelled? If it does comes back, how would you suggest they change it to attract more viewers?

A show that we can both watch and enjoy and talk about afterwards. Doesn’t happen very often. A little touch of Boston Legal now and then. We don’t watch reality tv but really like this one (and the Big Bang Theory).
I have been staying up every Monday until 10:00 p.m. to watch this show and was disappointed when I turned in on two weeks ago and Law and Order was on instead. I really like Harry’s Law and found it to be both humorous and serious and really like Kathy Bates. There aren’t very many other interesting shows on television.
I’ve been looking and looking for Harry. I love this show and hope NBC doesn’t cancel it and plug in anoother reality show or version of Law and Order
Love this show… The network finally gets it right and now what?
I cannot believe Harry’s Law is on the chopping block. Why is it when good writing, good characters, fantastic acting all come together, the powers that be decide to put place the show in the worst possible time slot? I actually “stayed up late” to watch the show just like I did for Ally MacBeal and all Kelly’s other shows. Kathy Bates is priceless. I am so sick of cops, contests and can’t stand it reality shows!
We love Harry’s law. We were so disappointed when we found out we had watched the finale! Please don’t cancel it….Bring Harry back.
Please don’t cancel Harry’s Law! Law & Order LA is just another cop show, and Monday night just isn’t the same without Harry’s Law–a wonderful mix of quirky & serious. There’s nothing else quite like it, and we need it! And of course, Kathy Bates… Please don’t cancel!
When the show dropped in viewers, what drew them away. There are literally dozens of channels and I remember one episode where I wanted to watch something else. This is a great show and should be continued until the writers run out of stuff to write about. Hey NBC, don’t give up on this one….its a winner. Pay attention to whats going on around you before dumping something……
I love Harry’s Law….do not cancel it!! It’s different, funny, unique, and change of pace from all the horrific blood and guts scenes of the CSI’s..How could the ratings be correct when no one ever asked me, or anyone else I know that loves the show….WAKE UP GUYS – Keep Harry’s Law…..
finaly something worth watching, I was thinking of buying a big screen TV.
will this country ever get back to supporting quality anything. We need something
besides hollywood promoting their airheads. Let the overpaid agents get a real
job.
How refeshing, finally our networks get it right. We are sick to death of the rough tough shootem’ stap stomp and slab em shows. So nice to see great talent at work, any one can sit behind a dummy steering wheel and donn a badge or act stupid over a much to made up guy or gal. Please do not cancel this great one, please let us have at least one hour a week of fun TV.
This show is fabu!! Couldn’t get a better cast, Kathy has been reborn with this show….it shows a whole new personality to her talents. Excellent cast, excellent writer and creator….David E. Kelly is a very talented man! Keep a good show on the air for a change, it’s about time!!
My family and I have enjoyed the show from the start. We are looking forward to seeing next season. Please don’t cancel Harry ‘s Law.
Please do not cancel this show!!! At least a dozen of my friends and family watch it, but they have failed to check in.
