A little over a week ago, NBC decided to cancel their new medical drama, Heartbeat. As a result of the cancellation, tonight’s episode is the TV show’s last. Was NBC justified in cancelling the series or should there be season two?
Set at the fictional St. Matthew’s Hospital, Heartbeat follows a cardio-thoracic surgeon, Dr. Alex Panttiere (Melissa George), as she tries to juggle her personal and professional lives. She eagerly fights authority, particularly when it comes to her patients’ health and well-being. The rest of the cast includes Dave Annable, Don Hany, Joshua Leonard, Jamie Kennedy, D.L. Hughley, Shelley Conn, Maya Erskine, and J. Louis Mills.
Heartbeat debuted on March 22nd. It followed an episode of NBC’s highly-rated series The Voice and drew a 1.39 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.30 million viewers.
Heartbeat moved to its regular Wednesday night timeslot the next evening and the ratings saw a dramatic dip, falling to a 0.89 rating with 5.16 million. The numbers have kept dwindling downward. Last week’s penultimate episode drew a 0.67 in the demo with just 3.86 million.
Those kinds of numbers are just too low for NBC to justify renewing the series so the cancellation certainly wasn’t a surprise. The peacock network is already busy promoting their new drama series for the fall. It remains to be seen if they will do any better.
But, what do you think? Did you like the Heartbeat TV show? Was NBC justified in cancelling it or should the network have given the series more time and a second season?
Yes of course Heartbeat was definitely cancelled too soon….it never got real chance to take off. I loved all the characters and the actors who portrayed them. I looked forward to watching each week and then all of a sudden it’s gone??? It had great storylines even learned about some medical issues. Please try again or sell to another network!!
I have no faith this message will make it to the network… This show’s cancellation is exactly why i dislike this network!!! This was a great show! Season 2 is a must! What a horrible way to kill a great show and end8ng.. I may not watch any 9ther shows from this network moving forward!
Loved, loved this show…so sad
What I have to say about the cancellation of this show is: BOO!BOO!BOOOOOOOO!
FRITZ
Sorry this show was cancelled. One of the best. I work for cardiac surgeons and for me I thought it was so factual and so interesting. Melissa could not be beat. She was the show. Loving the medical part and her determination to get what she need for the patient was absolutely extraordinary. I also loved all the non-medical parts which were suspenseful and interesting. The show was not given a chance at all and was cancelled way too early.
Both my husband and I are disappointed that Heartbeat is not being brought back! Such an entertaining and clever show. 1 season? Friends didn’t catch on right away!! Bad call, NBC!
Am really disappointed this show has been cancelled. I just watched the whole series back to back online. It took a couple of episodes to get into it but I love the quirky characters, medical storyline etc. I really hope a second series is made.
The reason they got low raitings is because they changed the night to Thursday. And on thirsdays everyone know greys anatomy is on. People have watched greys anatomy since it started and they were trying to compete with them.
I am very disappointed that heartbeat is canceled.
i loved heartbeat! Hoping for season 2
I loved it. Looked forward to every episode. My daughter said she thought by the picture on the hulu site, that it was a gory type show. She saw the bloody Hans didn’t recognize shaped in heart. First impressions everything. Once she watch loved it also. This series was refreshing . Content great, story lines interresting. So happy Ness and heart break as well as joy. When I first saw it I thought finally something without violate or guns. We need to find a better nelson population to rate shows!!Thanks for option to give my voice and other to redirect… Read more »

I just got to the last episode , I am still laughing .
My husband likes it too!
Aarrrghhhh! I just discovered this show on Hulu and love it. Please give it another shot. Wasn’t on long enough for people to find it and become a fan. It beats the creepy crime shows any day in my book.
Very enjoyable series- good medical with a flawed and interesting character. NBC too fast in pulling the plug. Some viewers more interested in plots then wannabe singers.
