A little over a week ago, NBC decided to cancel their new medical drama, Heartbeat. As a result of the cancellation, tonight’s episode is the TV show’s last. Was NBC justified in cancelling the series or should there be season two?
Set at the fictional St. Matthew’s Hospital, Heartbeat follows a cardio-thoracic surgeon, Dr. Alex Panttiere (Melissa George), as she tries to juggle her personal and professional lives. She eagerly fights authority, particularly when it comes to her patients’ health and well-being. The rest of the cast includes Dave Annable, Don Hany, Joshua Leonard, Jamie Kennedy, D.L. Hughley, Shelley Conn, Maya Erskine, and J. Louis Mills.
Heartbeat debuted on March 22nd. It followed an episode of NBC’s highly-rated series The Voice and drew a 1.39 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.30 million viewers.
Heartbeat moved to its regular Wednesday night timeslot the next evening and the ratings saw a dramatic dip, falling to a 0.89 rating with 5.16 million. The numbers have kept dwindling downward. Last week’s penultimate episode drew a 0.67 in the demo with just 3.86 million.
Those kinds of numbers are just too low for NBC to justify renewing the series so the cancellation certainly wasn’t a surprise. The peacock network is already busy promoting their new drama series for the fall. It remains to be seen if they will do any better.
But, what do you think? Did you like the Heartbeat TV show? Was NBC justified in cancelling it or should the network have given the series more time and a second season?
I’m so upset! I loved this show and the season ending was a great episode and one of the best twists I’ve seen to a season finale.
I love this show! Please dont cancel it!!! So many people i know watch it
I really loved this show!!! And I usually don’t like anything but singing competitions. So disappointing!!!
I love this show big fan, wrong move to cancel it.
NBC cancelled one of there best shows I absolutely loved it.Please change your minds and bring the show back.
I am so in love with this show. It cannot be cancelled. It needs another season to catch on. NBC is so wrong…….. I am devastated.
Wicked awesome show I love it and would love to see a season 2
With a 0.82? It would have been the lowest rated show ever renewed by NBC. It couldn’t do better than The Mysteries of Laura; another DEBACLE fortunately cancelled by NBC. All people needed to do was watch, and they didn’t. This was absolutely the right move.
You do realize that Seinfeld was a ratings disaster in its first year right? Sometimes especially these days networks pull the pull too soon on good shows like this. Instead of taking a chance to let them grow. That’s exactly what is going on here.
Big mistake with cancelling this series. I looked forward to it every week because it was different and interesting. Plus there is so much more you could do with this, especially the way it ended last night. It’s still new so of course ratings will be low.#bringitback
Absolutely, it should not have been cancelled. The whole medical part of the show was interesting. The cases they worked were informative. Unfortunately, to me the first 2 episodes were the least interesting, perhaps that was the error and people watched a couple of episodes and dropped it. I loved the case of the boy who talked backwards (the actor should get an award) and they used stem cells to “cure” him. The heart re-transplanted to man who also had the right-sided heart. The use of robots/technology to perform cardiothoracic surgery remotely. The heart transplant last week from an HIV… Read more »
I love this show it was wicked funny I want another season. Why air a show if you aren’t going to make another season.
Love this show! I can’t believe you ended it the way you did! Wrong move NBC!!!
I love this show I want more why bother airing a tv show and not do a second season very disappointed
NBC didn’t give it a chance, but it’s not just NBC it’s all the networks, ABC especially, not giving any of the new shows to get traction. With so many viewing option, the networks need a different benchmark to determine success of shows. And, if they are going to cancel a show they should consider the viewers and allow the producers to give the shows a proper ending.
Not the best medical show. Ripoff of earlier med shows. Much of the medical stuff is incorrect. No one does their homework. Sure, it’s based on a real-life doctor, but much has been glorified and changed to suit NBC’s own interests.
Glad it was cancelled.
