A little over a week ago, NBC decided to cancel their new medical drama, Heartbeat. As a result of the cancellation, tonight’s episode is the TV show’s last. Was NBC justified in cancelling the series or should there be season two?
Set at the fictional St. Matthew’s Hospital, Heartbeat follows a cardio-thoracic surgeon, Dr. Alex Panttiere (Melissa George), as she tries to juggle her personal and professional lives. She eagerly fights authority, particularly when it comes to her patients’ health and well-being. The rest of the cast includes Dave Annable, Don Hany, Joshua Leonard, Jamie Kennedy, D.L. Hughley, Shelley Conn, Maya Erskine, and J. Louis Mills.
Heartbeat debuted on March 22nd. It followed an episode of NBC’s highly-rated series The Voice and drew a 1.39 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 6.30 million viewers.
Heartbeat moved to its regular Wednesday night timeslot the next evening and the ratings saw a dramatic dip, falling to a 0.89 rating with 5.16 million. The numbers have kept dwindling downward. Last week’s penultimate episode drew a 0.67 in the demo with just 3.86 million.
Those kinds of numbers are just too low for NBC to justify renewing the series so the cancellation certainly wasn’t a surprise. The peacock network is already busy promoting their new drama series for the fall. It remains to be seen if they will do any better.
But, what do you think? Did you like the Heartbeat TV show? Was NBC justified in cancelling it or should the network have given the series more time and a second season?
Is NBC including Hulu watchers in their numbers? I certainly hope they have access to that data as well as the Neilsen ratings. I love this show!
Please bring Heartbeat back! NBC cancelled way too soon. Even thought TV has other hospital dramas, this one is different. Please give us Season 2!
Seriously, this was my show…adored watching it. Then you end it with her marring the both of them are you kidding me…not right at all…at least give me some closure.. NBC…you really need to do better!
Seriously! They could have ended it with Pierce – just cut out that final scene, since the show was canceled. So with that final grin, guess Alex never learns, and doesn’t care about either of them. Ugh.
I loved Heartbeat. I want it back. Dr. P.is so sassy. I want to know what happens to her job and her love life.
Seriously, NBC? I LOVED this show! One of the best Iv liked and ALWAYS looked forward to it being on. Lucky tv’s are expensive or my remote would have went through the tv. Did you really even give this show a chance obviously not. Maybe listen to your viewers. Iv even bought the season so I could keep it! Shame on you! You kick off a popular show but yet you will manage to keep some of the stupidest shows going I don’t get it. I’m sure MANY people would LOVE to have heartbeats keep going! I could laugh cry… Read more »
I love heartbeat‼️ Why do you cancel so quickly. Please bring back this show
You cancel shows way to quick, not giving it a chance to get off the ground.
Heartbeat is one of those shows. It’s serious, it’s funny, it’s quirky and we love it! Please do not cancel HEARTBEAT
I love this show! What is going on lately? Some of the best shows are being cancelled. Bring it back!
I think “Heartbeat” is one of the best shows on the big-three networks. I hardly watch anything except cable or In-Demand programs now-a-days because network programming is so formulaic — especially the medical genres. I don’t know why I even watched the debut of “Heartbeat,” but I did, and was instantly hooked. I love its quirkiness, the characters’ human vulnerabilities, and the fact that patient scenarios rarely turn into melodramas. If you, NBC, don’t have the sense to keep it on your schedule, I hope one of the cable networks pick it up.
Finally a great, riveting show and it’s already cancelled????? TV is so hit or miss anymore, but this kept my attention…so good, so new , and the network is so unaware of what actually keeps people interested. The supposedly season finale was so freakin good….now nothing. The actors were perfect and engaging…final words here, HUGE MISTAKE
Love this show, why do you put a show on, I devoted my time too and as usual you cancel it, NBC you never listen to your viewers, Great cast, writers and story lines, first mystery of Laura and now this. Never watching NBC again. Very disappointed.
What was nbc thinking?? Clever witty funny along with emotion drama.. come on you should have gave it a better time slot after it aired after the voice. very rare show very sad bring it back someone
NBC, you are making such a mistake cancelling Heartbeat especially after a mere 10 episodes! Each storyline offered extremely interesting ideas (unlike any other show on the air), the actors worked so well together, and there was always a message left with the viewer at the end of the show. Please, renew this series as this show has ‘heart’ and deserves a second chance!!
This show is articulate, funny, thought provoking, dynamic, inspiring and quite simply one of the best tv shows I have seen in quite some time. NBC is doing its viewers a huge disservice if it does not give HEARTBEAT the chance it deserves.
For the past few weeks I can’t wait to see this show. It has an interesting work and personal story. I dislike NBCs way of putting up shows but not renewing them. They did the same for Constantine and now they are doing it to Heartbeat. Do they expect instant returns? Come on NBC stop disappointing your viewers before we totally desert you!
