PBS just aired the final episode of Home Fires in the U.S., but is that really it for the TV show? Recently, executive producers Simon Block and Francis Hopkinson spoke with RadioTimes about the cancellation of the UK series.
The period drama, which aired on ITV in the UK, follows the members of the Women’s Institute during World War II. The cast includes Francesca Annis, Daisy Badger, Mark Bazeley, Leanne Best, and Samantha Bond. The show was cancelled last year after only two seasons.
In the interview, Block said he was surprised by ITV‘s decision to cancel Home Fires:
It’s always difficult to gauge how things are going to go so you don’t quite know what the criteria for whether something’s going to carry on or not. It had held its audience, it had won its slots, figures were strong as far as I was told so in that sense I guess it was a surprise in that it went against what we were expecting based on the criteria we were told things get judged by.”
Nevertheless, Block says he’s been touched by the efforts of fans to bring the show back:
I’ve been blown away. When the news came out that it had been cancelled, suddenly everything went ballistic and you really get a sense of how passionately people feel about it. That was really a bit of a shock.”
And what about another season? Hopkinson says they are actively looking for options to bring back Home Fires:
It’s something we’re talking about. I think the audience profile was very good – upmarket and female – and that’s an audience that a lot of advertisers want so there is some interest.”
What do you think? Are you a fan of Home Fires? Do you want the show to come back for another season?
Great series. Shows strong women as models and allows a view of the past that most persons alive today do not understand. Love to see more
Please bring “Home Fires” back as soon s you can. It was wonderfully absorbing and extremely well acted.
Why would a network decide to cancel a very popular series like Home Fires is just cruel to it’s viewers! I hope that they do hear the outcry to bring the series back. It is utterly frustrating to watch a fabulous show only to have executives make a decision for us the viewers!
This excellent series deserves at least another season and more. Home Fires is a set piece with The French Village, which covers the same time period. That show just wrapped season 7. More Home Fires please!
I just finished season two. I’ve really enjoyed this series. I’ve just read that it was canceled. How such a wrong decision was made is beyond me. I’m hoping it gets renewed. Had I known it was canceled, I never would have started watching it. I’ll miss seeing what happens to all the characters especially Pat. BRING BACK HOME FIRES,,
Please make another series my family and all my friends love it.
I thought I had seen an adver. stating that it was going to start again. Is this true? Please say its true. Please, it was cruel to stop it on such a high.
And yet another example of a rare gem not being renewed; this decision could do with a rethink!
Can’t believe it would be cancelled – just released down here in Australia and it’s an absolutely wonderful insight into what went on for those who “only stand and wait”. Beautifully done, please re think this.
So upset, absolutely loved this show. If I knew they were going to cancel it I would never have started watching it. The final episode leaves so much unresolved, never so mad about an ending before. Hope that they rethink canceling it.
I loved the show and was sorry to see it pulled so suddenly. Please bring it back. Which novel was it based on and where is the novel that is to continue the show?
Wondering why such a good show was cancelled?? Good acting, interesting, good story line. One show I could feel good about watching…
Hope you bring it back!
