Two stars of CBS’ The Big Bang Theory, Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar, will host the 62nd annual Primetime Emmy Engineering Awards. The event will be held on Saturday, August 14th, at the Renaissance Hotel in Hollywood.
At the event, the Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz studio, Desilu, will be honored with a special award nearly six decades after the premiere of I Love Lucy. Here are the details from the ATAS press release…
The Philo T. Farnsworth Award honors an agency, company or institution whose contributions over a long period of time have significantly affected the state of television technology and engineering. Desilu will be honored for their innovation of using a multi-camera film setup before a live studio audience. Desilu also used conventional film studio materials, production and processing techniques which made “I Love Lucy” immediately available for production and distribution of prints when the series went into syndication at local stations around the country. In addition, the honor is bestowed to commemorate the upcoming 60th anniversary of “I Love Lucy’s” debut.
This event is not televised. There’s no word if surviving Desilu employees, Lucie Arnaz-Luckinbill, and/or Desi Arnaz Jr. will attend to accept the honor.
It was Lucy herself who said YES to Star Trek when all the other studios said NO. Trekkies pretty much owe it all to Lucy.
P.S. I have a large sepia tone limited print of the photo above hanging over my fireplace. It’s really cool to see it in color. 🙂
DESILU also produced Star Trek.
