The Wrap reports that not long before his death on March 24, 2016, Garry Shandling and HBO had reached a deal to bring The Larry Sanders Show back to the premium channel. The report quotes Sony Pictures Television chairman Steve Mosko as saying, “I loved Garry. We were fulfilling his wishes to see the show move to HBO.”
A comedy, The Larry Sanders show provided a peek behind the scenes at a late-night talk show. Shandling starred in the title role. The cast also includes: Jeffrey Tambor, Wallace Langham, Rip Torn, Penny Johnson Jerald, Janeane Garafalo, Linda Doucett, Megan Gallagher, Sid Newman, Bob Odenkirk, Scott Thompson, Jeremy Piven and Kathryn Harrold.
According to The Wrap, The Larry Sanders show will be available on HBO and its streaming services. The series originally ran from 1992 to 1998, and was created by Garry Shandling and Dennis Klein.
HBO released a statement in the wake of Shandling’s passing, reportedly due to a heart attack:
Garry ushered in the modern period of original programming at HBO with his brilliant masterpiece, The Larry Sanders Show. All of us at HBO have a special place in our hearts for him not only for his enormous talent but for his kindness and decency. We will miss him terribly.
